Macbook Pro Late 2013 Photoshop CC Kernel Panics

I have a Macbook Pro 15" late 2013 / 2.3ghz / 16gb RAM / 500gb HD / OSX 10.9.1 /

When using Photoshop CC 14.1.2 I get regular system crashes (the grey screen of death - which reboots your mac).

Usually these crashes happen when i'm not even doing anything, like taking a phone call. I've had at least 3 in the last week.

If this only happens with Photoshop, it could be an install problem. You could try completely uninstalling and reinstalling, though that's obviously a pain. I think if it were me I'd plug in an external drive, install the OS to it, then install Photoshop to it and boot from the external. It'd be slow of course, but it'd tell you something. If it does the same thing on a clean install with no other programs loaded, it's likely a hardware problem.

It could. Your best bet is probably a trip to the Genius Bar.

I suggested the external HD because that would elimate any previous traces of the program as a possible cause. There could be something like a plist file that doesn't get removed when you uninstall. The Genius Bar is probably your best bet. They have more intensive tests that they can run.

No wacky additional stuff loaded makes MUCH Clearer that this is Apple's problem. More than one panic at the exact same Address with Graphics implicated in each case makes it more likely this is a Graphics Hardware problem.

The only other "see if this improves anything" procedure they may ask for at the genius Bar is a Re-Install. But they can help with that as well, and it may not be necessary.

I reproduced the problem on 3brand new models. Yes, three. I reproduced it twice on completely clean Mavericks installations, with no user data or third party software. After the third model, I went back again to the apple store and reproduced it in the store for them using an mp4 file at the genius bar and one of their Apple TV + external monitor (in the same way I reproduced it everytime at home). I asked to speak to the manager. He exchanged the machine with the higher end configuration (2.6GHz, 1 TB flash). With this configuration, I haven't had a single kernel panic or issue. I'm convinced it has something to do with the 2.3 GHz model + a driver in Mavericks which needs to be tweaked for it. Engineering has subsequently gathered all the machines I returned.

PS: Thanks to Grant Bennet-Alder for all his help with my issue.

All in all, I was extremely dissapointed with the model, but extremely impressed with Apple's support, which is and always has been the best.

Thanks nbar for getting back to me.

Feeling slightly disappointed.

I've read your previous forum posts...would it be possible for you to post here a step by step guide to reproduce the kernel panic? (AirPlay method?)

My crash is triggered whilst using photoshop cc with a document open (72dpi web page I'm designing). Usually I skype somebody (Photoshop is in the background at this point) and during the call after about 10 minutes the machine crashes.

If you post a step by step guide I can confirm if it really is a problem (or the same problem) with the 2.3ghz model.

> Did you experience any lag when mirroring your display over airplay?

Don't get me started on this! I've posted on these forums before about airplay lag from my new laptop compared to an iphone or ipad! I now use the Beamer app for streaming video to Apple TV. Seems to do a better job.

Out of interest, did you have an external monitor plugged in when you reproduced the crashes? Also, did you reproduce the crashes prior to the MBPr firmware update?
