i go to settings, general tab and tap on software update and it only shows a link for support.apple.com. There's no install button on the screen. So how can i update my software?

so how do i get rid of the message that has the number 1 over the settings icon?
A 3rd generation iPad, which has iOS 7.0.3 should certainly be able to update to 7.0.6. Try rebooting your iPad first. Press and hold BOTH the power and home buttons at the SAME time until the Apple Logo appears, then let go of both buttons and your iPad will restart. You won't lose any settings or data.
If that doesn't give you the ability to update over the air, you can still connect your iPad to your computer via USB and update it in iTunes.

ok, i've tried rebooting the system and connecting to home computer via usb. when accessing my itunes account, where do i go to down the software update? or does it update automatically once connected?
You have to click on the device on the left side of the iTunes screen to open in in iTunes then you'll have the option to update it to the latest iOS
