Airplay won't change to mirror iMac from Extend Desktop

When I turn on Airplay I only get audio. Black screen. Airplay drop down menu shows extend desktop and won't change to mirror iMac. I have restarted, verified/repaired permissions, checked for updates and reconnected everything. Help! How can I get AirPlay to change back to mirror iMac?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

I have never installed any of the apps mentioned in this thread. Anyway, I have followed the uninstall procedures for all of them without success. I still cannot use my Apple TV with my mid 2011 Mac. No problem with Airplay from my iPhone and my iPad. Till a few months ago Airplay mirror from my mac worked perfect. The symptom of the problem now is the same as mentioned before: mirror iMac option not greyed but not working, Airplay extend desktop option only transferring sound, not image (black screen). Maverick is on its last update (10.9.5). Apple TV also updated.

I am getting tired of this kind of things. Apple users are paying quite a lot of money for a product twice the price than their competitors but that is supposed to be stable and working. We accept to live in Apple store ecosystem with Apple censorship deciding about what we can or we cannot do. What we want in exchange to all of this are products working seamless and not having to spend our time to solve problems of bad produced software.

I am getting more and more upset with Apple. Are they doing anything to solve this issue ? I am afraid that not,

FIXED!!!! THANKS!!!! 😎🙂🙂🙂

To all those people that are still having trouble and have tried everything in the forum with no luck

I HAVE A FIX FOR YOU TO TRY (TESTED 3 TIMES)

iDisplay screen mirroring app was the fault for me

I installed it but delete it straight away by removing it from application to recycle bin wrong move number 1

I have also uninstalled it using CleanMyMac with no luck ( wrong move there number 2)

all with restarts but it doesn't remove all files folders & drivers

what needs to be done is use the uninstaller in the program

download it again if necessary from www.getidisplay.com

you DO NOT have to install it again

just run the iDisplay.DMG file you downloaded from the website above

click uninstall

which will give you an error saying file is corrupt

if this is the case

this is what you need to do

first which is REALLY IMPORTANT go to the location below first and change a setting or it wont work :-)

system preferences

security & privacy

and change the setting at the bottom to ALLOW APPS FROM ANYWHERE

doing this will allow total removal

then run the iDisplay installer again which has the built in uninstaller you ran before

click uninstaller and follow the prompts to remove it totally

l have now uninstalled iDisplay without an error saying the uninstaller is corrupt

followed by a restart

now everything is working great again

THATS IT, ALL DONE!!!!! enjoy your streaming

Your solution worked for me, Siberiankj.

I had airParrot installed prior to Mountain Lion. there's definitely a conflict between the airParrot drivers and airplay which had resulted in us not being able to use airplay from the iMac for a couple of years now. I didn't remove airParrot, just moved the two drivers in the three locations to a different folder. Restarted the machine and airplay was back in action. Of course I may as well move airParrot because without those drivers, you don't get to extend desktop, and airplay's doing the job now, so....

Still had a teething issue - once connected, Iwas then unable to disconnect airplay (I know, connected for the first time in two years and what do you want to do? disconnect....). Solution? Why, go into sound settings, of course, and deselect Apple TV. Seems the audio to Apple TV connection is prohibiting the disconnection of the screen airplay.

After calling Apple Technical Service, they suggested me to reinstall OSX. I did it and the Airplay problem was solved. This was a little bit drastic solution but I was tired of trying every solution suggested in this thread without success. This reminded me of the old Windows days where to solve any minor problem with your computer the fast solution was to format C: and reinstall everything. Sincerely I thought that with Apple these kind of things were not going to happen.... :-((
