PCIe-SSD for New Mac Pro 2013

Hello guys:

Qucik Quesion, I have this 2013 New Mac Pro, and I am wondering, is the SSD inside are same in the MBP or MBA?

I have this quesion because I want to buy SAMSUNG MZ-JPU512T/0A2 SSD, some page on eBay says it's available for New Mac Pro, and it did looks like the same type of SSD in my Mac Pro

So I just want to ask that if it is ok for me to buy SAMSUNG MZ-JPU512T/0A2 SSD and install to my New Mac Pro

Thank you for your time!

Mac Pro (Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

According to the second link for the MacBook Pro Retina late 2013, the same upgrade works in that as the 2015 model.

I have used a similar SSD in an old 2010 Mac Pro which is only PCIe 2.0 and I do get the full expected speed of around 1500MBps.

The speed limitation is more to do with the number of PCIe 'lanes' which is only four rather than 2.0 vs. 3.0.

You are certainly not going to find anything faster for your MacBook.

oh Awesome! so if were to use a PCIe 3.0 SSD pulled from a 2015 Macbook pro retina I would see faster speeds than the stock SSD in my 2013 late macbook pro even though it comes with/uses PCIe 2.0 .. Craaazzzy . Thanks for your replies 🙂 . So the PCIe 2.0 specification vs PCIe 3.0 is got more to do with the ssd than the logicboard/interface of the laptop .. its all making sense now 🙂

I've been watching this thread for options as I want to upgrade my 2013 Mac Pro's SSD with a larger one. In digging around I came across something on Samsung's website for a pre-release SSD that looks like it might be what we need? http://www.samsung.com/us/computing/memory-storage/solid-state-drives/ssd-960-ev o-m-2-1tb-mz-v6e1t0bw/

They also have this pre-release SSD that goes up to 2TB: http://www.samsung.com/us/computing/memory-storage/solid-state-drives/ssd-960-pr o-m-2-2tb-mz-v6p2t0bw/

Thoughts on whether these would be compatible?

The answer to whether they are Mac compatible is both yes and no.

They use NVMe which is not supported in Mac firmware, as a result you cannot boot from one of these but you should be able to use it as a data only volume. You will need to install an NVMe driver on the boot drive - which remember this new SSD cannot be.
