Making 1024x1024 from standard photo?

What am I missing? I need to make a batch of photos 1024 x 1024 which I assume means square. My photos are "standard" vertical or horizontal. When I export my photos with the dimensions 1024 x 1024 I still don't get square photos. One side only is 1024 and the other 768.

I know what I have to do now. For anyone who was as clueless as I was, the way to do this is the first crop all images in square format. Only then can you export them 1024x1024. :-)

If your pictures are not square to begin with, you cannot change them to a square without distorting the aspect ratio/proportions - they will no longer look right. The 1024 x 1024 refers to the number of pixels; the size in inches would depend on the resolution used. Below is a screenshot of the scaling feature window in Graphic Converter; I don't have Lightroom, but there should be a possibility to scale pics in the file menu somewhere.

In this example, the pic is a standard 8 1/2 x 11; at a 72ppi resolution, that would be 612 pixels wide and 792 pixels long. If I change either of those, the other will change automatically since I have the "proportional" checked.

So, you'll get a square if your pics either are square to begin with or you choose an exact square portion of the image.

What you are showing is standard. 1024 will be the length and the software automaticly changes the width to the 768. You need to give the Length in Inches and the Width in Inches as well. It is confusing to those not familiar with Photo Editing Software. It would also help telling us exactly the Photo Editing Software you are using.

iPhoto is entry level software. Whereas, Aperture, PhotoShop, Lightroom etc are Professional Softwares and are not for the faint of heart, they can be very confusing to learn and use. Remembering these are Professional Softwares and not for the casual user.

Thank you, Donald Morgan for trying to help me out. I was asked to send some photos 1024x1024. Nothing was mentioned about inches and width. Again, I am using Lightroom 5.

By "you need to give the Length in Inches and the Width in Inches as well" do you mean that I need to ask my client exactly what the inches must be, too?

I was sent a sample jpg (130KB) but I do not see anywhere (in "get info") about inches.

I'm sorry I'm not getting this at all... Would you please bear with me?

Ok 1024 pixels converts to 14.222 or 14 inches and just a tad under 1/4 inch. The .222 is just a tad under a 1/4 inch .250 is one quarter inch. If you are doing this for a client it sounds very large, unless they are doing them for a Photo Colage or for some reason they need them that large. I would be interested in the size the raw image they sent. Hopefully they are awaare that they will loose a lot of quality if they sent you a smaller image and expect you to enlarge it and for it to be a pristine image. It works very well if you are making the raw image smaller you won't loose quality. But, it is exactly the opposite going from smaller to larger, Using Adobe Products. Again it matters what the Resolution is as well you can do well if the resolution is very high and reducing the photo you won't loose very much. But again it will make the image blurry or distorted if the image is 72 and you try to make it larger.

If you are not familiar with doing this type of transition, make a copyof the original and play with the image and you will see what I am talking about.
