My Mac has a Virus!

I'm using osx 10.8.5 and my Mac has been compromised. Every time I am on Youtube and other sites tons of strange ads pop up on the bottom and right side of the screen. Sophos scanned clean. Any suggestions?

Just to chime in with this one. I just got infected by a real bad virus.. in the last 25 minutes or so. First proper one on my mac. Firstly I noticed Logic X had no samples then Safari kept quitting.. opened up firefox, after a short while that started quitting. Went to download Bit Defender from the App Store and the store app wouldn't open!

I've fixed it and I am currently running Bit Defender to double check the virus has gone, here's how I got my Macbook Pro working again...

I booted down, and booted up holding down CMD and r, then selected Disk Utility - First Aid - Verify Disk... Verify Disk never usually comes up with anything bad but this time it did. So it looks like the virus successfully corrupted something. Then select Repair Disk. After it's done it should say 'problem fixed'. I then went out of that and re started as normal.

Opened up everything that didn't work before and it all works.. samples back in Logic X, Safari worked etc etc.. :-) This worked for me so give it a go.

Still doing a scan so can't tell you if it's still lurking around somewhere. All I know is my Mac works right now.

Hope this helps someone. 🙂

My Macbook Pro IS infected by something. Whatever you want to call it. And I got it by clicking on a link looking for a midi file (stupidly as I thought it didn't look right) Everything went wrong from that point. And I'm having real trouble getting apps to work, even spotlight isn't behaving right.

So what do you think the problem is? And btw it's not a clogged up hard drive or anything like that.

what I described above actually got the macbook working but then silly me kept using it and it came back after 20 minutes whilst I was scanning. This morning I will see what state it is in as it's been scanning all night.

Csound1.. I can't remember the link where I got it but can I suggest you search: drum midi Africa toto

There's an orange download link button, you shouldn't have a problem ;-) Actually don't do that!

Thomas, you are a lifesaver! Not only did your Malwarebytes product fix the annoying "From Around The Web" pop-up ads that had been plaguing my Mac, it also removed a virus I didn't even know I had that was preventing me from being able to see photos in my Messages. I don't normally comment on support boards, but just wanted to put this out there for the search engine bots in case somebody else runs into the same problem. Thank you!! 😀
