Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
All software updates have been installed and in Mac Mail the mailbox count numbers are off centered in the little bubbles next the the mailboxes, drafts, junk mail folders, etc. Tried so far: Only have system fonts installed, rebooted in safe mode to clear caches, reinstalled mail application. Please help it's driving me nuts!

If your profile is correct, the mail version you should have is 4.6 (1085). If you have not done this, download and apply the Combo updater below.

It may take a little time, it is a big update, and it won't harm anything even if you have previously applied it. Then follow up by checking software update.
It has been known to correct minor problems and glitches.
Mail was at 4.6 (1085) but installed this update again anyway. Rebooted and ran software update, only an iTunes update was offered. This problem still exists.
I've never seen those bubble type icons before ... but I seem to remember reading somewhere that they come in different colours and have some relationship with Thunderbird. Do you use Thunderbird?
I don't use Thunderbird and its never been on this Mac. Do you use Mac Mail? I'm at bit confused at you not seeing those "bubble icons" before. I had them with Mail Mail in 10.4 and 10.5.
Just set up a guest account and have the same problem with a new email account. This has be thinking it is a font problem. Isn't there a font preference somewhere I can delete?
Don't think so. Reviewing the situation this is normal. It is simply the background to the advice that you have so many mails unread. End of story.
This situation is not normal, the screen shot below is normal and it is from my wife's iMac running 10.6.8. Mine used to look this this before installing 10.6.8.
I notice that the bubble in my wife's mail has what looks like a bold font, my mail bubble font doesn't look bold. So I replaced my system font Helvetica.dfont with a copy from her system folder and it solved the issue. Must have been a corrupt font. All is well. Thanks
Thanks for taking the trouble to update us. Good solution. You may not believe this but I hadn't associated the misalignment of the numbers as being the problem.
Just upgraded to 10.6.8 issue in mail
