I am a fairly new mac user and don't know about messages that pop up when I log in. I just opened my computer to do a search and a popup message said to use MacKeeper to clean and speed up my macbook air. Is this an apple product? If not, should I use it?
Crapware!
All it is can do on your Mac is cause problems.
The only thing it is good for is loading Zeobits' pockets with gold.
Avoid like you would the guy in the dark suit from the government who says I am here to help.

MacKeeper is sold as a product to help people
when in fact its as useful as a venomous snake and as worthless as a wooden nickel.
If you're coming from "the dark side" aka Winduhows... Macs have very few of the problems and exploits that plague Window users. There's not much in the way of virus's or web exploits.
Most of the "malware" is installed by naive users who consider UA and TOS documentation that come with "freeware" to be an "ingnorme" file, not a readme file. Hence they voluntarily install spyware that phones home all the time.
Stay off the darknet (p0rn) and you'll be alright.
