Hi,
The Connection Doctor sort of lies about this info.
Mine reads
If you set any other Bandwidth Limit other than None it will go amber.
I have 500kbps set
The reason for this is not everyone is on the same sort of Internet Speeds and may be shairng their connection with a host of other devices.
I have a 40Gbps download and 10Gbps upload service which can mean I can send info much faster than other ends can receive.
500kbps also drop below rates that some ISPs think is file sharing apps (4 way Video chats or 10 way Audoi chat can have a large amount of data coming your way and going out to a variety of IPs).
It can also smooth out a connection that is varying too much.
You need 384kbps for a 4 way chat to be successful (Up and Download), so a 500kbspo setting still give you so leeway.
It also allows the Buffering which deals with variances to be able to work. (individual frames are dropped to try and maintain a free flowing video - until the Audio gets dropped as well, as it can't sync)
On the Name of the type of Router it is much the same thing.
Apple like it to be a Full Cone router (this will make it green.)
You cannot reset your router to be anything else that what it is.
There are four main types (with of course lots of cross overs)
See this section at Wikipedia for descriptions and pics.
Basically it's about the way data is sent from your computer's app on one port and goes through your router on to the internet and how it then makes the transfer from the internet to your Buddies LAN and the app on his computer. And of course more importantly the return data.
An Apple Base Station of any type will be doing Full Cone.
As long as Port Mapping Protocol (Apple's version of UPnP) is enabled then multiple computers can use the same ports.
If you want to do Screen Sharing in iChat or Messages then you have to use UPnP in most routers
This allows the apps to tell the router which ports to open.
They stay open for a specific time after none use. On some routers this can be changed to shorter periods.
Out of the box a router will have open the first 1024 ports. (there are 65535 in total)
Some apps only use ports below this threshold.
Some apps and some games use ports above the threshold.
These are the ones that needs some method of opening the ports.
As iChat and Messages use a random port when doing Screen Sharing you need to use UPnP.
Some router will also have "security" features that can get in the way.
If you tell me the make and model (including any variation sub numbering/Lettering) I may be able to point you in the right direction with more detail.
