macbook pro makes repeating "error" alert sound

Hi, my MacBook Pro randomly began making a constantly repeating error sound, like when you press a wrong key or command on your computer. This sound just started when i booted up my MacBook Pro this morning, and is only not audible when I mute the computer (logically). I tried to see if any keys of my keyboard were stuck, and that doesn't seem to be the case. Also, after first noticing the problem, I proceeded to update the OS to 10.9.2 (from 10.9 or 10.9.1, don't exactly remember) and after the whole reboot, the problem still persists. Any thoughts on what the problem could be and how I could fix it? Thanks

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

My macbook pro is doing the same thing too.

I restarted my mac and then the "alert" sounds is repeating like 5 seconds. The sound is like "Tuuuut.....Tuuuut.....Tuuuut". I don't know how to fix it too..

but i think you should go to pc service... let the pro do this things...

My mac mini has also started randomly making a constantly repeating error sound, like when I press a wrong key or command on my computer.

It also happens when I start up, and at random intervals. At startup, the sound is a different one, as if someone is hitting a wooden box or something. After startup, when it happens again, it is the regular error sound: "dingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdi ngdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdi ng..." and it repeats indefinitely until I press command-period a few times.

The sound stops when I press command-period, but it happens again after a while at random intervals. While it happens, the computer is inoperable, that is, I cannot select any icon in the Finder or perform any command, until it stops.

I also noticed that restarting from a different startup disk , by holding down the option key to select a disk now is also impossible. The only way to do so now, is to invoke Control Panel>Startup Disk.

I have zapped the PRAM and reset the SMC (I think) but the problem persists. I say "I think" because holding down command-option-p-r does not result in 2 startup sounds, just one, and the system boots with the recovery disk.

I have never been stumped by a mac problem in more than 20 years, until now.

The 'error' sound on typing is similar to the one that you get when you have hit 'Cmd + P' and print menu is open and you try to type something without clicking a proper position. Same happens when you try to type without selecting proper place to type and cursor is not blinking. Like when you have closed a popup/an app and the Safari or any other application is in the background and that app is not selected properly.

What works for me:

Solution 1. Restart the Mac.

But, I don't like to do that because it seems that the sound starts coming out from no apparent reason. But, it can't happen without a real issue in the background. So, restarting your mac for just this purpose is not an ideal solution every time because, you may actually working on something that is time sensitive.

Only other thing that works for me at this time is as follows:

Solution 2. Close all the unnecessary apps and desktops from the multiple desktops section that you get on the top.

Close all the unnecessary apps running in the background and keep only 1 or 2 open that you are actually working on.

Close all extra desktops that are open and keep only one current desktop open.

Try the 2nd solution first, it works for me almost 90% of the times.

YES THIS WORKED! Before I even closed FreeMemory, I had muted all user interface sounds/volume change feedback, but this took about 2 days to actually come into effect...Once it did go into effect I didn't hear the repetitive sound anymore.

HOWEVER, I un-muted all the system sounds (they're working fine) and quit FreeMemory and the sound is gone!

Thanks for all the help 🙂
