Printing Troubles

A month ago, I did not know what happened to my macbook Pro printing system. Whenever I wanted to print a PDF in black color only, there would be a supporting code appeared: 91 The following ink cartridge will be used for the specified printing. "Color" Select [Color Only] or [Both Black and Color] in the Ink Cartridge Settings panel of the Utility and print again. Then I did what it asked me to do, and the printer printed my document out. However, the words from the printed document is in grey color instead of black. I thought it was a problem of my printer but it turns out my printer functions well when connected to other's macbook or laptop. They could print normally without any troubles. I have tried to print PDF on other printers and it did not work well too. Since I can't stand the problem anymore, as I need to print lots of hand outs for classes weekly, I reinstalled my macbook pro once and try to see if everything reset to default would solve the problem. Yes, it did go back to normal for few days that I can print PDF documents normally, but troubles start again. I am wondering what happened to my macbook pro.

The printer that I have been using is Canon MG2120, which it worked well with my macbook pro for more than a year. I replaced all ink recently, after the trouble occured but it did not solve the problem as well.

Did anyone experienced similar issues?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

The grey colour is a result of the printer using the three colours (Cyan, Magenta and Yellow aka CMY) instead of the black. Given the error you got and the message about using Color for Both Black and Color, this current output is understandable.

I would have suggested that the nozzles for the blank ink could be blocked and you should do a nozzle test via the Canon IJ Printer Utility. But when you mentioned that the printer worked fine on another computer, this suggests that the print head is okay. So, to be sure, can you open the utility and select Test Print then Nozzle Check. This will print a page of small sqaures made from all four colours. Do you see the black and the other colours? If no, then that explains the lack of black text. In this case, do a deep head clean and then print the nozzle check again. Once the black appears on the test page, you should get text printing again. If the black does not appear after a deep head clean, then you may have to look at replacing the print head.

If the nozzle test does print the black, then I would assume that there is a setting in the Mac via the Canon IJ Printer Utility that is still set to all colours for black. I don't have this setting with my MG6360 so I'm not sure where you can change this back to Black only. But if you can change it back and then try printing a text document again, I wonder if your reinstallation of the OS has done the trick?

Since the symptom is only occurring with PDF's then if you are using a third party application like Adobe Acrobat Reader to open and print your PDF's, then try opening up the PDF in Preview and then see what happens when you print.

If you are already using Preview then you could try downloading and installing Acrobat Reader, which is free, and then opening the PDF with that application and then try printing.

I used Adobe Reader first, but it didn't work. So I tried to open up my PDF in preview and try to see if that's the Reader's problem... But turns out the priniting issue exist on both application.

So I believe that's a setting problem 😟 and I still have no idea how to solve this...

Open Printers & Scanners and select the MG2220. Click on Options & Supplies and then click on the Utility tab. Then click Open Printer Utility which will make the Canon IJ Printer Utility open. From the drop menu that will show Cleaning, change this to Ink Cartridge Settings. Change this setting from Color Only to Both Black and Color, as shown below.

Click Apply to make this setting stick and then quit the Canon IJ Printer Utility. Now print your PDF. The text should now print as black rather than using the three colour inks.

I changed the ink cartridge to [Both Black and Color].

But another weird problem happened...

The picture below showed both of my printings from different applications.

The one with grey color and placed in the right location of my US letter size paper, was printed from Abode Reader, while the outcome of printing from Preview is the same.

For the one with black color but misplaced on the paper, was printed directly from the online source....

The problem seemed to become more complicated........
