ads pop up in Safari - how to stop

I am having ads pop up on every page in Safari from adnxs.com among others. The code does not come from the page, but from Safari. How do I stop them.

Thanks for the help.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac works but in my case I just downloaded the free avast antivirus for mac here https://www.avast.com/en-us/free-mac-security and it took care of the rest by doing an automatic scan every time I use the the browser. I didn't try the first one but once you install the avast antivirus it will solve your problems.

There is no virus currently in the wild that can do any damage to OS X. Anti-virus programs, while well-meaning, are absolutely useless. Please uninstall Avast according to the developer's instructions. AV programs actually can damage your computer, and it doesn't actually protect you from anything, because the real threat is malware, and they don't detect it.

As I said, uninstall Avast.
