This update is causing my Mac Mini (2011) to reboot into a grey screen. Time Machine restore is required

Is anyone else having this problem?

I've tried 3-4 times to apply this update and every time the maching will reboot to finalize, but after the Apple logo and spinning wheel the mac stays stuck on a grey screen of death.

I always have to turn off the mac and start up holding option to boot onto the recovery partition and restore from a time machine backup made just before applying the update.

I haven't seen this update available on any other of my macs that have Xcode and Server. Not sure why this is happening,,,

Thanks Kemmey! I'm so glad I found this thread. I'm one of these 2011 Mac Mini (w/ Radeon GPU) users with 10.9.2 and Server that had this update recommended while my Seiki was disconnected and then just applied it without much thinking. It's really too bad that I don't have a TimeMachine restore for this guy because it serves as the TimeMachine (among other things) for my other Macs! Thankfully your insight got my display back so we can continue to use this as our XBMC home media center.

I also created a bugreport.apple.com (16269716) which was promptly marked duplicate of (16314844):

Summary:

When an HDMI device is connected to the 2011 Mac MIni (with Radeon GPU) on boot, the HT6139 update (to OS X 10.9.2 with OS X Server) will cause the computer to stop at a gray screen (no mouse visible).

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Install OS X 10.9 on a 2011 Mac Mini (with Radeon GPU)

2. Install OS X Server

3. Install XCode (not sure if necessary)

4. Install 10.9.2 update

5. Disconnect/disable HDMI display

6a. Wait for the App Store to check for updates

6b. Remote desktop in and use the App Store to check for updates

7. Reconnect/enable HDMI display

8. Install update HT6139

9. Reboot

Expected Results:

Computer boots normally to Mac OS X login screen.

Actual Results:

Computer boots (and gets eternally stuck on) a blank gray screen with no mouse pointer, computer seems fully running via remote access

Version: OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)

Server.app 3

Notes:

Discovered work-around: boot without HDMI device attached, then attach HDMI device. Not sure if related, but Screen Sharing is now not showing the correct colors after applying this update. (see attached screenshot)

Configuration:

This only occurs on a 2011 Mac Mini with Radeon graphics after HT6139 has been applied.

FYI

This morning I installed several updates on the mac mini via App Store app. And the problem is fixed. I can't say exactly which update fixed the issue since there were several since i last updated a month ago, but it must have been either of these; probably the os x server update

- Security Update 2014-002

- OS X Server 3.1.1

- Xcode 5.1.1

finally i can reboot without having to unplug the hdmi cable.
