Color/saturation shift in FCPX 10.1

I've been using Resolve to color grade my footage , render to Prores 422 (hq) and then import it into FCPX. I noticed that there is a distinct difference in the color and saturation of the footage when viewed in Resolve and FCPX (or QuickTime) . I imported the same footage into Premiere Pro CC and it appears identical to what is seen in Resolve. I started to investigate this and came across the "QuickTime gamma shift" issue. Is this what Im seeing ?

There is so much info out there about this and it is hard to sort out which work arounds apply to which versions of FCP? I saw a FCP gamma adjustment for FCP 7 in the systems settings -> playback, but I can't find this in FCPX10.1. Where is this adjustment in FCPX ?

Thanks if you can help !

I psoke with a colleague out in L.A. All that she does is color correction - In Davinci. She said that round tripping with FCP X is best done using XMLs. She also told me that more & more rough/first cuts are being done with Final Cut Pro X & Davinci - whether it be on set or at the post facility.

There is an involved "solve" that includes FCP X. I have been editing since rewinds & sqwak boxes, Uprights & table editors with film. Todays workflow is so much more inclusive of the creative team. It used to be that the editors & directors rarely got to know the "lab" wizzrds. We'd ask for 1 light prints to use as work prints. then answer prints to see where color adjustments had to be made.

These days it is not uncommon for the Director, Editor and Colorist to all work in the same room side by side. Even if it is all one person using a Mac or PC.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in. This has sent me down a deep rabbit hole ! I've spent several hours investigating this roundtripping stuff and its pretty involved. I see why it is recommended to eliminate the color shifts that I am experiencing, however a lot of FCPX effects do not transfer over to Resolve with an xml export.

If I color grade the source in Resolve and then set the deliver preset to FCPX and then import that footage into FCPX, I only have to do a small saturation increase and exposure decrease to get it to appear as it does in Resolve.

For my needs this seems adequate at this point.

I've been looking for solution to the same problem. What did you come up with?

So far, I was able to get the same look from Resolve when I render out in DPX format. Then I use AJA's software to make it into a mov. All is fine at this point. But when I import that mov into FCPX, all is lost. Color and gamma shift. What can I do?

It's not a system setting in the Display preference in OS X because you are talking about a difference between two apps on the same system.

I don't have an answer for you. I don't use Resolve. I do, however, color grade and I do my cut in FCP X first, then I grade on that cut. Are you doing your editing in Resolve??

You do your first cut in FCP X

Export XML so it takes the source clips versus you having to export use ProRes files

Import the XML into Resolve

Color grade. The timeline should look like the FCP X timeline with the clips being the same, and it uses the source clips

Export out the XML

Import XML into FCP X and add your credits, titles, etc.

There are several web pages that explain the workflow between FCP X and Resolve and I don't see any of them saying there is a shift between the apps. Weird.

Good luck

Sad that this is still an issue, It seems that FCPx is doing some new color math and no one else seems to be following. Apple says Resolve is not correct and BlackMagic says Apple is not correct.

I have found that outputting a DVD or to quicktime will in some cases look the way it is suppose to (as it does in Resolve) but on youtube depending on the browser you view it in it can be viewed incorrectly, Safari seems to use the color profile in the video to view it correctly but in a browser like chrome it is not correct.

This is all very confusing and i would think the issue would have been solved by now.
