ironhyde33rd,
open Finder’s Preferences, select its General tab, and make sure that the “Hard disks” and “External disks” checkboxes in the “Show these items on the desktop” section are checked.

Thanks for replying but i just did that and it didn't work.
I is working on a windows computer perfectly fine.
ironhyde33rd,
which filesystem has been formatted onto your external hard drive and flash drive?
I think is Exfat
ironhyde33rd,
which filesystem does your Windows computer say is on them?
im sorry i don't know😟
ironhyde33rd,
didn’t you state that they’re working well with your Windows computer? Does Windows not provide a way to show which filesystem is on a drive?
Try this instead: plug in either drive to your MacBook Pro, and run Disk Utility. Does the drive appear on the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window?
I have the same problem. I have tried what you suggest and can see my hard drive .. when I try to verify it comes up with error .. then I try to repair and it comes up error too ...
I am not using OSX Mavericks .. I went back to Lion ..
Does anyone know an alternative than formating?
davidfromairdrie,
which errors do the verification and repair report?
