Looks like it was "improved." First click "Show Edit Toolbar" next to the search box. Then select "Smart Lasso" from the dropdown from the left-most tool (looks like a blue dashed line box). Use the Smart Lasso to select the item you want to select. Preview will ask about converting to .png with the part of the picture cut out.

Watch out! After selecting the item, press crop. This will create a .png file BUT it replaces the original .jpg file. Best to duplicate the original before using the Smart Lasso or you will lose the original jpg!
leroydouglas has the best reply. Just ignore mine. If I knew how to edit or delete my posts I would.
