First, in iphoto, click "File",,, then "Export". Take a look around this place, a lot of options, that you can use, depending on what you want to do with the CD or DVD. Tell us more about that.
FIle -> Export and export them to a Folder on the Desktop.
Burn that to the Disk with the Finder's Burn command.

Very simple. Export (file menu==>) to a desktop folder. Then in the finder burn that folder to disk

go to finder and open a new "burn file". Click and drag the event/photos from iPhoto over into new burn file. click "burn" command at top of box.

That is not the correct way to burn a CD - it gives you lower quality previews - the correct way is to export the photos to a desktop folder so you control the quality and size and then burn that folder to CD - as previously answered by a couple of people

The photos in my "burn file" are same resolution/size as the originals. (iPhone and 35mm camera shots) Don't know about previews. I'm burning to send copies of full-size originals to family. (I don't put my photos on clouds.)
Then export using File -> Export and set the Kind to Original
