A grey progress bar will appear and will load for a little bit and will shut off, what do I do?

Same issue here with a MacBook Pro in which I installed a SSD a few months ago. The strange thing is that it boots fine on the Windows partition (Bootcamp).

Running SOS with Disk Utility on the disk (after booting with cmd-R) finds no disk error, nor does the /sbin/fsck -yf command (after booting with cmd-S).

However Disk Utility only only sees "other" files (yellow), where it should see apps, photos, etc. .... so it seems to be a Mac partition issue.....

any clue?

I don't know why that damage cant be detected and because of that can't be repaired. You need to save your info and format the Mac partition.

I Just realized that this theead is for Snow Leopard… I installed El Capitan when I replaced the drive. For info, I reinstalled it from the recovery boot yesterday, and it seems to work (without data loss). I'm stI'll confused on how this (crash during start up) can happen…

Mmh, that doesn't matter. I have El Capitán too.

I thought I fixed the problem, but it happens again next day, whenever I start up with shift key it is working in safe mod. Friend of mine who is apple technician he told me my hard drive over its life, I am waiting my samsung SSD, I will post to result,

I started to have this issue too just as I was getting ready to watch Game of thrones:) whatever i did wasn't a permanent solution. But interestingly, when I kept pressing the "eject" button and start the computer normally, it worked. Temporarily I taped this button and use my computer this way. But I know it won't go like that. God I love my mac. I don't wanna throw it away!

I have the same problem with my Macbook Air. However, it boots and run perfectly well if I keep pressing any key and not let go immediately after I input my login password - fn will do. As soon as I let go, it shuts down, at any moment (during boot or after). Yes, weird indeed.

Another detail is that it can go on forever if I don't choose anything in the select-user screen (I mean that it doesn't shut down). So, the problem appears once you select your user and the booting process starts.

The story: spilled water on it, and after about 5 days it turned on. At the time it booted, but shut down a few minutes after loading everything. I tried several solutions, and the last thing I did was resetting the SMC. Immediately after, the fan is at the highest setting from the very beginning and does not stop, and whenever the grey progress bar appears (even if I try booting from a usb), it shuts down after a little bit of loading.

I tried everything proposed in this topic.

What can I do to solve the two problems:

- fan does not stop;

- macbook shuts down if no key is pressed.

I am having this EXACT same problem. I spilled a splash of water on the front of the keyboard (a few drops may have leaked in below the space bar or around the trackpad), powered down until dry, powered on, logged in, and then the computer would just power off on the white mac screen during loading. I read your post and tried holding a key in and voila! - the computer works as normal (I have had the fn key taped down for the past week). Did you ever find a solution to this problem?

The funny thing is, if I release the fn button while the OS is running, a window pops up asking "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer" (the same message that pops up when you press the power button) directly before the machine powers off completely. It's almost as though the computer thinks the power button is being held down consistently and that holding in another key will interrupt the 'signal' somehow. If I try to shut the computer down using "Shut down..." in the apple menu, the computer will shut down, power off, then immediately power back on again and try to load the OS only to power back off after a few seconds; this process will loop indefinitely. A friend of mine suggests that there may be some liquid trapped in the keyboard circuitry tripping the power button circuit, although I have not attempted to dismantle the machine to check.

PS - I am running OSX Yosemite on a 13in Macbook (late 2009)

PPS - I am not having problems with my fan

Oh, and I also thought I should mention... I have gone through a checklist of "10 tricks to get your macbook to boot up" including resetting the SMC (which actually prevented the computer from powering up completely (the light on the magsafe adapter darkened to a dimmer green) until it miraculously started powering up again after attempting to reset the SMC a dozen or so more times).

I had the same problem, but your advice help restarting my macbook. I had to try several times, but eventually it worked out fine!!
