Mac Pro does not wake up after sleep

Hi all,

my brand new MacPro does not wake up after going into sleep mode. I have various Thunderbolt and Firewire devices connected. My MacBook Pro, when connected to the same devices, can be woken up.

The MacPro is still running as I can tell from the fact that the connected HDDs are still active. I very much dislike having to push the power switch for 5+ seconds to shutdown the Mac just to restart it.

(Keyboard is BT, Mouse is LogiTech Unified Receiver (USB))

I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks,

HU

I had this same problem for the last week on my late 2013 13" retina Macbook Pro. Every morning after having been asleep overnight my machine would crash and restart when I opened the lid rather than waking from sleep. I read all of these forum posts, tried the steps in the Apple Knowledge Base article, but still the crashing after extended periods asleep (interestingly, short sleeps during the day - like when I was in commute - did not seems to trigger the crashes).

Finally, yesterday, I ran across a suggestion from a poster on the Apple StackExchange site that suggested a workaround. I tried the workaround and today for the first time in nearly a week my computer didn't crash overnight.

Here's the suggested workaround:

  • go to System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Power Adapter tab.
  • check the box "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off"
  • uncheck the boxes "Wake for network access" and "Enable Power Nap while plugged into a power adapter" (I also have disabled Power Nap disabled when on battery, in the Batterytab, but I'm not sure this was required).

For those still experiencing this issue but the Knowledge Base suggestions are not helping, try this workaround. Good luck!

Took my Mac Pro into the Genius Bar. They ended up erasing the hard drive and re-installing the OS. They tested it for a couple of days and say it’s now OK.

Got it home. Restored user account from Time Machine and the very next day I get another sleep/wake failure.

So is this software related? How can I tell - there are no crash logs and I don’t remember installing anything new to cause this.

Could I create a new user and see if it crashes with that brand new account?

Just spent an hour on the phone to Apple Care. They said that the full Time Machine restore would have potentially put the “bad” backup back on my clean drive. They advised wiping the drive again and then only restoring the user account which would leave the system files intact.

If that doesn’t work, I am going to do the same thing again but with a manual restore.

My new mac pro did this once a few months ago, though up until a week ago it has been behaving fine, sleeping/waking many times a day.

Now it has failed to wake twice in a week (sleeping and waking many times in between the two failures).

Both failures were after sleeping overnight. No external drives were connected at the time.

The log of this mornings failure.

This is the 'powerd' history before the sleep failure. I always wake it on a single click of the mouse.

Thought I might weigh in on this issue, as I was plagued with it for the better part of a year and a half.

The symptoms I was experiencing with my Macbook Pro Mid 2009 15" with Yosemite 10.10.4 were very similar to what has been reported above. I would close the lid of my Macbook Pro, and if I was to open it after more than about ten minutes, one could hear sounds coming from within the chassis, as well as the fan turning on, but the screen would be totally black and the keyboard unresponsive. The only solution would be to hard boot the machine as the keyboard wasn't responding when I attempted to wake it and activate the screen.

I finally took it into the Genius Bar; the Apple Support person completed the following steps which fixed this issue for me:

  1. Booted up the computer and in the Finder menu along the top of the screen, they went to Go > Go to Folder > /var
  2. Within the /var menu, they then located the file called 'sleepimage' within the /var/vm folder.
  3. The Apple Support person then removed the sleepimage file from the folder, placed it on my desktop, and restarted my Macbook.
  4. When the Macbook started normally after a reboot, the Support person then checked the /var/vm folder once to make sure that a new sleepimage file had been generated.
  5. Last, the Support person moved my old sleepimage file to the Trash and emptied it.

They explained to me that at times the sleepimage file to which your machine saves a saved image of your session when you put it to sleep can get corrupted. Instead of the system wiping the sleepimage file each time the computer is put to sleep, it acts like a cache with a constrained file size (stays at 2.15 GB) and will add to the file. So, if one sleep session produces a corrupted sleepimage, your computer will continue to write to that corrupted file, continually causing the sleep / wake issue described above. I hope this helps.
