Backup not working

I'm trying to back up my iPod to my computer, and after I accept backing up my apps and transferring my purchases, I get an error message that says "The iPod could not be synced because the sync session failed to start." Also, I've been having a problem lately where I manually put songs in my iPod, but they don't get updated into my iPod, so I can't listen to them. Please help

iPod touch, iOS 7.0.6
