How to display one window on a TV while using a different window?

I want to watch a movie on my TV via my laptop, while doing some homework in word in a different window. Can I do this on Mac? I've seen teachers do it before, but with non-apple computers. Please help!

Thanks

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

Just set your Mac to extended desktop mode and drag your movie window to the TV screen.

Do this in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement. Note that the Arrangement window will only show up when you have an external display actually connected to your Mac.

Also note that if you normally have the Dock on the right side of your Mac screen, it will disappear when you go into extended desktop (aka non-mirror) mode unless you first change the Dock to Left or Botttom. If you forget to do this and your Dock disappears, you can always get to System Preferences via the Apple menu and reset the Dock position.
