After iOS 7.1 update: red '1' badge on settings app

Dear Apple Support Communities!

The download & update to iOS 7.1 was successful. Well more or less. My iPhone 5s made no problems, everything works fine. Except the iPad Air (WiFi, 32GB). After the update to iOS 7.1 the red '1' badge on the settings app stayed stuck. (See image below)

Here my solution tries:

  • Checking via Settings-Software-Update or/and Info, if I have the latest iOS version installed - I have iOS 7 (Build:11D167) installed
  • System reset (Home & standby button pressing) - No change
  • Restore from iCloud backup - No change
  • Restore from iTunes backup - No change

The only thing, which worked as a 'soluation' was a restore to a new device. Unfortunately I have to re-sync all my stuff manually. This is very disburbing/frustrating and I now decided to wait for a fix, iOS 7.1.1!

Here how it looks:

Same problem here, iPad Air works fine.

My iPhone 5 still show the red '1' badge on the settings (after update to 7.1)

I sent feedback to Apple about this bug.

holy cow, i think i got it.

I just got a 5S a couple weeks ago, and i LOVE it, but then someone sent me an animated gif (that i couldn't even see!), and it screwed up so many things, including the red badge for messages. mine was stuck at "2" all day, no matter what i did.... short of a full restore, which i really didn't want to do.

I even tried going into the Notification Center and turning off badges for Messages, and turning it back on-- the "2" came right back!

I remember which two messages I got that made the badge appear. I held my finger on one of them, chose "more," checked only one of the two, and deleted it. The badge disappeared.

I would be very curious to know if it mattered which messages were deleted in this situation. I should have tried a random message, because I was pretty sure deleting the guilty message was likely to work. I'd love to know if anyone tries it with any random message (or even a random message from the person who triggered the permanent badge) and what your results are.

I hope this is somehow helpful.

My wife's iPhone 4S (iOS 7.1.1) was having the same problem. I tried all the various combinations of resets, turning on/off various notifications, everything but setting up as a new device. I came across ghost8675309's post, and thought I'd take the same approach. Didn't work for us because my wife uses her iPhone for business and gets too many messages to make it remotely feasible. However, I started looking through her mess sages to see if I could spot anything peculiar (I even want as far as checking that everything had a time stamp). Lo and behold, I come across two unsent messages that failed to send. I proceeded to delete these two messages and the "Red 1" disappeared.

One thing to note: a common thread in ghost's and my approach is that we each deleted a message. Not sure that this will work for everyone, but I thought it would be worth mentioning (since that makes me 1 of 2 people that has successfully resolved this issue...in the whole world...yeah).

Good luck and feel free to donate to 1PybuV8dsg4jooHw7EShP6rByzDrYwfie6 if this helped you.
