Black Screen But Can See My Cursor

So every time I boot up my computer I am getting a black screen but my cursor is responsive. I tried rebooting in recovery mode but could not reinstall my OS because of Apple being unable to "verify" my computer. My macbook is a 2010 but I was just as the Genius Bar over Christmas to have my computer checked out and they said everything is running great. Any ideas? Solutions?

I live 3 hours away from the closest apple store so anything anyone can recommend would be helpful.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I had the same issue with my 2008 iMac and Apple support walked me through the fix yesterday...

1. Shut the computer down by holding the power button for 10 seconds

2. Restart the computer and press shift at the same time until you see the progress bar start moving

3. Once you reach the point where your screen goes dark and you see the cursor, type the first letter of the username for your computer, then hit Enter, then type your password, then hit Enter.

4. After a moment, you should see the spinning beach ball

5. Your screen should then move on to something along the lines of "Completing OSX Installation" (I can't remember the exact wording). Let it finish. After that it should go to your normal desktop and the issue should be fixed. (If your screen goes pitch black during this process, hit the space bar. I thought it wasn't working, but the screen was just sleeping).

Apparently it's an issue with an automatic update that never quite got past the login screen.

Hope this helps!

Yay yay yay Jesse!!!! You saved my life! I had a huge job due today and could NOT get any of the Apple suggested fixes to work! It took me twice to figure out entering a keystroke and hitting "enter" (as like someone else here I couldn't remember what username we were using) but hit a letter I thought might work and "enter" and it came back. Beware the 10.9.3 upgrade is RIGHT. I kept putting off installing the upgrade, but did so last night with the black screen result this morning. Bad, bad job Apple!!!! How many people are having their day ruined with this nonsense? (i also have 2013 iMac with retina display)

I just wanted to share the fix I have if it happens to you instead of doing a format and reinstall.

  1. Start computer holding up COMMAND + SHIFT (puts you into single user mode)
  2. In the prompt enter: mount –uw / then hit return (please note spaces in command)
  3. Enter: cd /Library/Preferences then hit return (please note spaces AND the Capital L and P – it is case sensitive)
  4. Enter: mv com.apple.loginwindow.plist com.apple.loginwindow.plist.old (please note spaces) then hit return
  5. Enter: Reboot then hit return
  6. Once the computer restarts tap the trackpad (so you see the cursor) then enter the first letter of the username, which would be a (it is best to use the administrator account) then hit ENTER
  7. Now enter in the password (groupmtech), then press enter

perfect solution!!! saved me a lot of time not calling apple support or stopping by the store. once i saw in the post that there was an install that did not complete I remembered i told the Mac to wait and try again tonight. it must have started a reboot on its own and didnt make it through the whole process.

Apple really needs to take care of that problem!!

Hi Hoss,

Yes there is. Sadly the username trick didnt work for me but I did manage to fix the problem by using SSH. By connecting to the affected machine and cleaning up a few files you should be back in business.

1. ssh 192.160.0.1 -l username

2. sudo rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist

3. sudo rm /Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist

4. sudo rm /private/var/db/.AppleUpgrade

5. reboot

Thats it! It's likely you'll have either one or the other of the plist files but not both - hopefully that shouldnt matter. Obviously in step one you would replce the IP address and username with yours.
