Hi,

unfortunately I have no solution for the Wi-Fi problem, but I have something interesting going on with my iPhone 4S:

when I press the upper right corner of the phone (where the camera is) the Wi-Fi comes back on and stays as long as I keep it pressed.

Can someone explain this? And my Wi-Fi is NOT greyed out, but it is constantly unstable - ever since I updated to the new iOS7 - whenever my phone is heated (general use for about 5-10 minutes max.), the Wi-Fi is gone - I have read on one thread on CNET website that the problem has something to do with the battery heating up, because iOS7 and above is not made for earlier phones including iPhone 4S (even though Apple never gave us any 'heads up' for this)... I have contacted Apple and here is the official 'we don't care' response:

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble with the WiFi on your iPhone. I know that I would be impacted greatly if my iPhone could only get internet connectivity via cellular data.

I see that you have tried many trouble-shooting steps already, and I will assume that includes restoring the phone to factory settings and then setting up as new. If that has not resolved the issue, you may indeed need a hardware repair. While there may be a charge for this since you state your warranty has ended, I believe this may be a good option for you that may have a lower cost than purchasing a new phone.

Apple Stores and other 3rd party Apple Authorized Service Providers can be located all over the world through the following website:

I hope this will help you access a solution for the issue you are experiencing with your phone.

Thank you,

-Jeff

I have had the exact same problem for a few weeks now. I reset the network settings, I then reset everything, and I especially make sure that my software was up-to-date. My phone company offered $40 for it to be fixed but I have a feeling that if I could just suck it up for one more year, I could upgrade. Unfortunately I do not have the patience to wait for one more year (until my contract runs out). My phone is two years old, and it has been working perfectly, no problems whatsoever, before this issue came suddenly very recently. I am unbelievably frustrated and I cannot use my phone at all or else my 3G will skyrocket. The others devices in the house have been working perfectly fine, including the Wi-Fi itself. Believe it or not I am actually using my friend's iPad to write this!

HELP!! 😟

Hi there afbs84,

I think you might have something going there. I would ask anyone with this problem to think about where do they charge their phones. I have noticed that when traveling in my car and charging the phone for few days with an old phone charger I get the problem. I also being charging it with my iPad charger while the problem of the WiFi was there, but I did try your suggestion (although I had to leave the phone off for much more than 30 minutes) and all of the sudden the WiFi was back. It is still on for over a week. I am only charging the phone now with the original charger...

It maybe a coincidence. I will let you know in few weeks

Hi well i live in NewZealand Auckland, um theres few shops that repair the wifi chip, it cost me about $120 for a new wifi chip, im hoping this will be a permanent fix!

I hope so too. Because if it is not, then you'll have to get that same repair shop to try again. FYI, Apple will no longer provide any service or support whatsoever for that device. Granted, the $120 you spent on just the wi-fi chip was cheaper than the $314 Apple would have charged for replacing the entire unit, so you've possibly saved money in the short term, but it's a 'no-turning-back' option now.

I wish you the best, and I hope your wi-fi chip (which was either salvaged from another unit, stolen, or counterfeit) holds up.

I had the same issues everyone else has mentioned. I've done all the tricks and resets except for overheating the phone. My WiFi was out for about a month, and then all of a sudden it started working again. it was intermittent at first but now its working 24/7. I do notice it flipping between WiFi and 4g when I'm in certain rooms in my house. I recently purchased a new wireless router to help with that.

The apple tech I spoke with told me it was a hardware issue and since my 4s was old (purchased in 11\2012) the cost to replace the WiFi module was not worth it. I couldn't believe a phone that was less than 2 years old was considered old, but you have to take into account that the 4s was manufactured before 2012. The one thing I can suggest, like the post above, is to reset ALL settings. It seems after I took this step things started to go in the right direction. I also turned off all my location services and auto updates, basically anything that would be using WiFi. I still can't fathom what would make it work out of the blue. There weren't any software updates so that would rule out that side of the argument, no?

On a side note, I don't think I'm going to update to ios8 until all the bugs get worked out, nor will I be updating any apps. the 4 and 4S models will be the next to fade away and I don't want to make changes to the older model that can't be undone.

I got lucky with my WiFi. Hopefully everyone else does too!
