Iphone 5s battery drains fast after ios 7.1 update.

Am I the only one who seems to be experiencing this? My iphone 5S battery seem to drain much faster than usual, and charge longer. I heard that the new update is supposed to increase battery life, and read comparison threads regarding other iphones that are capable of a much better battery life than mine.

I've had my phone for 3 months, never have dropped it once or anything of the sort, if that matters. My battery drains to 50% within an hour or so after intense use on the lowest level of brightness, and I seem to lose about 5-7 percents when on standby for 5 hours or so. Is this normal? Is it perhaps due to the fact that I am mostly using 3g, and applications that require more processing such as tumblr (graphics and gifs) as well safari? I'm just worried that my battery may be draining to quick, despite the update which's supposed to make it much better according to many people.

Thanks.

Please dont post all the same things we have talked about on this discussion already ....obviously you have not read any of the previous pages where we all know about the typical battery saving ideas....we are talking, on this discussion, about dramatic battery drain after updating our phones to a new software version. Where we have not done anything different, and our phones suddenly drain to almost nothing in a few hours, etc. The issue is not turning down the brightness, or closing backgroud apps (DUH). Appreciate the thought though 🙂

Hi EvyOsh thanks for the response and the video, the story goes that I charged my IP5s today at 9am and by 11am when I took it off charge it was at 100%. The imagine in my earlier post was taken at 15:18 after little usage, I had to recharge my phone at 16:00. it has been like this for a week or so, i would charge my phone before bed but take it off charge so it's not charging overnight, it would be on approx 80% battery but when i wake up in the morning completely dead and I'd have to charge it again in the morning. Whats worse is that I use my phone as my alarm which due to dead battery has not gone off and I've been late for work! ATM i get approx 4-5hrs battery life which is quite poor. Since noticing the battery drain issue I have following various comments on here on wider web to save battery but still having the issue. Called Apple and went in store where both performed a diagnostic on battery and showed me a graph which apparently meant my battery was functioning normally. Apple call centre actually sent me some guides on "how to charge your phone correctly" and "understanding lithium batteries". I've just backed everything up and currently performing a restore to see if this will fix the problem. I compared my mates IP5s earlier and he had about 14hrs standby with 5hrs usage and was at 48%. CRAZY! It's my first Iphone and only 6 months old.

I'm with you on all this... 2 battery replacements later and all the hoopla and repetitive advice about making the smart phone not so smart and still going through rapid battery drain on my 5. What makes this particularly interesting - my wife's 5C is now doing the exact same thing.

battery diagnostics will only confirm the hardware is ok and Apple will not admit to glitchy background services that are continuously working even in sleep mode. They will most likely blame it on a faulty app crashing or brightness - which - in their defence is probably all they know.

in my opinion there is a growing software issue that they continue to try to sweep under the rug. Believe me - I work with technology in edI action so am no stranger to testing and I am convinced that Apple'a iOS engineers are either scuttling ios7 until 8 arrives - OR - simply have no idea how to correct the issue.

do a variety of searches on Twitter as well - #iphonebattery #iphoneproblems - a lot of noise out there with only poor advice about battery conservation not software failure.

Just my two cents..

anthonycara - you are absolutely correct in all your points...it is unbelievable how many posts you can find about poor battery life and all the stupid suggestions to turn off stuff doesn't get to the heart of the matter, that all our phones, or most of them, worked fine initially with out making the smart phone dumb. All related to software. My phone also gets incredibly hot sometimes when charging...all related to the same issue i believe.

This works for me, my battery finally last one full day (very rarely after updated to iOS 7)

Give the following a try and see if it helps (i did not reset my phone at all, and see a huge improvement in my phone's battery life)

Iphone 5, iOS v 7.1.2

Settings -> iCloud -> Switch off Safari (keeps your Safari tabs in sync across all Apple devices, if you need it, sorry)

Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh -> Switch off Skype (mine was enabled before) and any other apps that you dont need refresh in background

Give it a try, might not work for you, but works very well for me. Good luck and all the best!

So after 2 trips to the Apple Store and then sending in my iPhone 5s to have the battery replaced, I continued to receive no satisfactory remedy to my battery drain problem. This Apple Support Community has been a great resource of information to share with and refer to.

However, with only 33 days left on the factory warranty, my only solution to this point was to exchange it for a new one. No questions asked! I hope this helps someone with a similar situation as mine. As for now, I am again a happy camper.

Thanks for the update.

Unfortunately I havnt got the option of a replacement as my warranty is out. But im hoping when ios 8 is out next month the problem will be fixed or else its a new phone $$!

Anyway my observations of this issue over the last few weeks are...

  • The problem effects my 4s in 'waves'. Its working fine for a few days then problems (battery drain/heating up) for a few more. My fix appears to be drain the battery to zero and recharge (turned off) to full. 'Most' times this fixes the issue. Turning off background refresh etc. does not work as most here seem to acknowledge.
  • I have tried different means of charging and what i have observed is, charging from a power mains (while switched on) with an apple plug causes a reassurance of the issue. I am now charging from a device (laptop connection or stereo dock).
  • I have noticed when charging on the dock (Philips DS3100/05 Docking Speaker) when I have the battery drain issue. I get a warning message on the 4s notifying me that this device (dock) is not compatible etc. When the phone is working okay I don't get the message. Maybe there is some connection between charging through a device and not through the mains (or maybe not!!).

Well its obvious after 5+ months of a bad battery drain and no fix from apple. All the hard resets and other BS they say will fix the problem. After turning off all the "smart phone" services so you have a dumb phone still didn't work. I have found a solution. Buy a Samsung, works great battery lasts a long time and worse case you can buy a replacement or spare battery for 19 bucks at any battery store. And if you have a problem you can walk right in and they will help you. You don't have to make a special appointment for permission to see them. I'm done with apple, for good!
