Memory Problems

Hi All,

I have a Macbook Pro Mid 2012 i7 2.9 GHz with 8GB Memory and 750GB HD.

Lately my computer has been acting very slow and I can't work out the problem. I opened up Activity Monitor and noticed that my memory is getting used up extremely fast and that even Skype starts acting slow.

The list of process going on is HUGE and I just don't have a clue how to stop these. Almost every day these are the programs that I use; Skype, Safari, iTunes, Messages, Mail, Reminders, Dropbox, Skydrive. And then from there I open close excel, pages and other softwares that I might need.

I've attached here screenshots of my Activity Monitor, can anyone help me out? I have done Verify Disk Permissions and everything was fine, so no problems there.

I'm stuck here and curious of the cause, I'm hoping to fix and know that I wont ever cause this again.

Please please please please help if anyone can please?

Thanks,

Sean

Activity Monitor shows that your RAM is being used VERY effeiciently by Mavericks, so there's no problem there.

I'm not certain why you're experiencing sluggishness - it's certainly not because of RAM, though. Skype always seems to give some users problems - are you sure that you have the latest version and that your broadband connection is up to par?

That's good to hear regarding the Ram. I've enjoyed using Mavericks thus far and it definitely has been helping.

My broadband is 10mb, and I don't seem to have a problem in using it what happens is that I'll go to the app and then start typing a message and then Skype seems to hang until suddenly the message gets posted.

This also just doesn't happen with Skype. It happens with Pages, Excel, Word, Mail, iPhoto, Messages, disk utility and pretty much all other programs every now and then - Including Finder.

I have 200GB of space available on my HD. Could perhaps 'erasing free space' help?

These problems are starting to make me want to get the really really bad apps that supposedly help like 'MacCleaner'. I really want to avoid doing that though 😟

Whatever you do, don't use any app that claims to 'clean' your Mac - they always do more harm than good: always.

Let's take a look at the third-party software that's loading when you boot. Download, unzip and run EtreCheck and post the results in a reply here. We'll try to eliminate any third-party extensions that might be slowing you down first and, if we do't find any culprits there, I'll recommend that you make a 'fresh' (as opposed to a 'clean') installation of OS X.

Call back,

Clinton

sdhammond,

There could be a number of reasons that your computer is sluggish but RAM is a non-issue in your case. It could be a number of things - third-party startup items, a hard drive that's slowly withering away, etc.

See -> Why is my computer slow? - by ds store. Some of it may be a bit basic but it covers the bases pretty well.
