importing sony camera pics to macbook pro

I'm sure this is old hat for long time mac users but as a newbie, I need help!! Issue simply put, have v.old sony dsc t10 digital camera (c 2007) recently got macbook pro intel duo core 500 gb. (c2013)

I'm trying to import pics from the camera into iPhoto library?

I tried inserting the camera's removable memory card into the mac card reader.. no automated response that makes sense (yet...)

also used various bits of mac tools to see if I could 'see' the memory card.. unless its described in obscure code, I couldn't.

This is really just me being lazy, asking instead of enjoying my voyage of discovery on the mac but also testing my feet in the support community waters. Hope I'm not being too Homer Simpson but all levels of help would be received with gratitude.
