Safari developer tool reports "No inspectable applications"

Hello all,

I'm using iOS 7.1 and desktop Safari 7.0.2. I'm trying to test a website I'm building on mobile Safari via the remote debugging feature of Safari. The iPhone is connected and is showing up in the Develop menu but despite having mobile Safari open on my iPhone, desktop Safari continually reports "No inspectable applications" and will not let me open the site. I've search the internet for ideas and it was suggested I might have private browsing turned on, which is not the case.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thank you,

Alastair
