iPad 2 VPN access with iOS 7.1

I updated one of my iPads to iOS 7.1. The upgrade went smoothly but now when I connect to a VPN service (strongvpn) the performance is terrible and I can no longer stream videos through the VPN. My other iPad which I have not updated yet continues to work fine with the VPN as does my iPhone 4s which has also been updated to 7.1. I have used the ookla speed test and get about a 40Mb/s download speed when not connected to the VPN this drops to under 1Mb/s when I run the test after I connect to the VPN . The other iPad and iPhone get about 12Mb/s download speed via the VPN.

I have tried turning off other features like cellular data, Bluetooth etc but nothing changes. I even went so far as to completely reset the iPad and start from scratch but whatever I try I cannot get any improvement in the download speed when connected through the VPN so streaming video is impossible.

I have been in contact with Strongvpn but they have no idea what is going on. All my other devices continue to perform well - just this iPad since it was updated.

Has anyone else who uses Strongvprn successfully updated their iPad 2 without issue?

Sorry for not responding sooner. I didn't try either SurfEasy or Tunnelbear since I have a second ipad that is still running an older version of ios so I can continue using my existing vpn provider.

I've just re-contacted the folks at StrongVPN asking them if they are working on any kind of workaround. I did contact them back in March and they just referred me to this thread so they are definitely aware of the issue.

My wife has an ipad air but we have not upgraded it to 7.1 or later until we know this issue is resolved.

OK, Gromit. The tech support team at Surfeasy tells me their entire plant has updated to ios7, and claim they see no slowdowns in VPN speeds.

I was hoping some regular folk like you, who have already updated one iPad, could install the Surfeasy app, and do a test (trial is free).

OK the first snapshot is my iPad 2 without VPN, the second connected via strong vpn the third via surfeasy. So my question is why does surfeasy work OK but strong vpn and many others I've tried not work?????

Did you install their iPad app and sign up for a FREE trial? If so, THANKS.

Maybe it's because they're a Canadian company? Hard to know - but if they work, then it would appear other VPN companies are taking shortcuts.

When you tested - WHICH COUNTRY did you use as a SPEEDTEST? USA? Canada? UK?

yes all I did was sign up for the free service and installed the app.

Im in Cyprus and use the iPad to watch UK TV. Since the update it's been impossible to connect to the UK and stream live TV,

just tried all UK tv channels and all work perfect Connected via surfeasy vpn.

Also changed server to UK and carried out speed test and this was 8 without surfeasy vpn and 4 with which is still OK.

Contacted strong vpn tech support and asked the question why their vpn doesn't work and they don't seem to have a clue.

Time to sign up for surfeasy full package!

WHen you get a chance, try using the Canadian Surfeasy server and do a test to a Canadian Speedtest site. I'd be interested in the speed there.

no you don't need to uninstall strong vpn. Just follower the instructions on surfeasy website.

GRomit, it's pretty easy - just install the app, create a trial account, and then install which countries servers you want to sample.

I have been using Surfeasy for about a year without any problem. My iPad2 is using the most recent iOS 7.x and I donot have the problem noted in this thread. The recent update to the Surf Easy app has given me some different issues...but not this one. Note..they appear to use IPSEC .

I use Tunnelbear from time to time without this thread's problem.

I used Hide My *** recently and only had a problem when using very distant servers ...eg. India, Malaysia....

I have not experienced this problem using private internet access or Hide My *** and the openVPN Connect app.

My connection is very slow to begin with and any vpn will impact speeds but I stream movies and soccer games just fine.

I suppose I should add that this is using Netflix and ESPN and the like.....not torrents or overseas streaming sites. The results might be different with those but they are not my thing. I just did the Ookla speed test thing with all the Surf Easy servers and only took a speed hit with Singapore.
