I just installed 7.1 11D167 on my iphone.
When I connect my iphone to my mac running 10.6.8, iphoto opens but it doesn't pick up the new pictures on the phone.
I ran software update for the Mac running 10.6.8 and rebooted.
I also rebooted the phone.

Did you try the Image Capture app?
Same condition in image capture. The phone shows up as a device but there are no pictures to be imported.
It might be time to make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple store.
I still think you need to sign in to iCloud, go to iCloud prefs on the computer, check photistream, turn it on on the phone. The pictures from the last 30 days will go to Photostream. Go back to iPhoto on computer and select Photostream and the pictures will be there. Phone has to be connected to wifi.
Do you think this is a problem with the phone or the mac?
This problem started to occur after a patch update to the phone.
i am having exactly the same problem. I've tried all the ideas mentioned here and it still doesn't work. This started after I ran the updates.
Hopefully Apple will realize the update broke this functionality and will address it with a patch.
Same here. After updating my iPhone 4S to IOS7.1, I can no longer download photos to my iMac via iPhoto or the Image Capture app. Both 'see' the iPhone, but say there are no photos to download.
I do not want to use iCloud, I want to download photos from the iPhone to the iMac directly. Have submitted a bug report to Apple, so fingers crossed.
Did you get a bug number? I would like to reference your bug number when I submit a bug report.

...and just out of interest, does your phone now not automatically correct the photos for landscape/portrait?? i.e. do they remain 90 degrees incorrect???

Everything was fine before updating my iPhone 5S to IOS 7.1. But now every time I connect the computer to iPhone using USB cable, the iPhone asks " Trust this computer?". When I tap "Trust", the computer and iPhone are still not connected, instead after a while the iPhone asks again "Trust this compuer". No matter how many times you trust it, the iPhone simply does not connect to the computer. This looks like a bug in this verssion of IOS. I can no longer sync my iPone with the computer now; neither I can copy the photos from iPhone to the computer.
Is the cable you're using an Apple provided cable or a 3rd party cable?
It is Apple's original cable.
