For those that have sent their MacBooks for Repair (Randon Shutdown)

It seems unfortunantly that many of us are sending are MacBooks in to deal with this random shutdown problem, so I thought it might be usefull if those that have sent their's in could post what parts were replaced and if it was succesfull or not. Thanks

Problem: when I went to turn on my macbook, it would take 3-7 tries before it came all the way on and stayed on so that I could work. (it would sometimes just make a noise and turn off, sometimes come all the way on, then turn off again)

took it in for service, I live in Sweden (but bought the computer mid May 2006 in Houston), they replaced the motherboard.

when I took it in, they said they had another computer (just like mine? a macbook?) with the same problem.

I have had it back 1 week. things are going fine, except 6 days after getting it back, it now will not recognize the battery and there is an x in the battery. I have taken the battery out twice to see if it was just a bad connection... but that did not work.

WOW - that was a brilliant idea - thanks for that 🙂 - Done that and sent it to myself at a Webmail account I sometimes use

The photos are needed because I know someone in the UK whose MacVook came back more damaged than when it went in for repair - yes he has complained bitterly and it was sent by Apple to a different firm .

My MB is staying up not too badly - I'v had 1 RSD this morning and it's running pretty cool at 46 degrees on 1GHz at present - the only way I can get it back up is to hold down the Power button for the beeeeeeeeeep

Forunately I discovered that the e-mail I had been tyoing at that point was sent to draft as it went down - so that was useful.

it took almost two weeks (waiting for shipment from singapore) before they replaced the logic board. its now week 28 - anyone had any RSD from that week?

machine worked fine for two days, carried it around, then i had to restart for the first time and boom - i was quite shocked to only find a dark, lid screen (as in not pitch black) after the initial startup sound and thats it...!

booting from DVD failed as did much everything else until i reset the NVRAM - that did the trick, phew!

no RSD as of yet.

I was about to have my macbook sent for repair. I didnt but i figured this might be relevant to this thread.

unfortunately the genius didnt see my mac shut down at the counter. but the genius says that the repair guys will figure out whats causing the shutdown.

catch is, he wont guarantee that the data in my hard drive will not be touched. he says apple can back it up for me and if the back up is subsequently required i have to pay a 50 dollar fee. that ticked me off some because i felt it was unfair to have to pay a fee to protect data that was being harmed by the manufacturing defect. if they feel that the data might be lost, apple should save the data and let me keep it to protect itself since it is their product that is causing the loss of data.

i refused to have it sent without a replacement unit because i need my mac everyday. plus my files are confidential as they contain client information.

after th incident i checked the threads for information and there seems to be an abundant source. enough to at least know that there is an ongoing problem. I love the mac even if this is the first unit i owned. but apple is lacking in fairness in dealing with this random shutdown issue. truth be told, apple should just replace the offending unit but save the hard drive for installation in a new unit. it would seem that the hard drive is not the issue anyway.

but considering apples silence, we really wont know for sure. class action comes to mind. im really really disappointed.

1.83ghz macbook Mac OS X (10.4.7) it shuts down weird

I have one logic board replacement behind and still have those random shutdowns about 1-15 times per day. My MacBook were fine for a couple of weeks after repair, but I got the symptom back after the latest firmware update - I guess.

However, it is strange that Apple will not give us any information regarding this matter what so ever. And when you phone to Apple's support they act like they have never heard about these shutdowns. Yea right.

Save yourself some work if you can run the MB for a
few minutes .... just print off a pdf of your system
profiler.

What an excellent idea! I've done that as well to keep with my MacBook history documentation (just in case I have problems again). I didn't realize you could do that.

Just for the record, my repair DID NOT fix my problems.

After my machine came back, I went 6 days without any random shutdowns. I attribute that more to the firmware update than to the keyboard replacement. 😉

But now they've come back with a vengence. I've had 2-3 per day since last Friday. Very, VERY frustrating.

I just received another box from Apple yesterday, will be shipping this back for another round of repair later today. (fingers crossed).

"still having problem after a logic board replacement, but less often..."

Aug 30, 2006 1:41 PM in response to Vincent Beaucher

I have a week 21 Blackbook that I Recieved from Mac Mall the first week of June. In Mid July I started to have the random shutdown problem. Just like everyone else it started slow and got worse over time. I took it to a genius on 7/28 and they took it and sent it for repair of RSD and the rainbow screen on bootup. After watching the boards here I fully expected them to replace the logic board etc. that has been done on so many other machines. It was returned to the store on 8/7/06 with the following items replaced:

APP-593-0219 LVDS Cable w/Camera

I assume this is the isight camera and the cable that connects it to the logic board. I couldn't believe that that was all they replaced. I was sure that I was going to get the RSD problem back right away. After my first shut down restart with the machine it needed to have the pram reset, but since then I have had no shutdowns. It seems to be the computer that I expected when I purchased it.

I have since installed the ROM upgrade for the fan and although it does run more than before it is much (10-12 degrees) cooler and I can actually use it on my lap on occasion.

Hi,
Got the logic board replaced 3 week ago and lost a week of use (cost under warranty was $1,035). One week was OK then it went down totally with RSD averaging 30 to 40 per day. Went back to store, driving 2 hours each way, to be told they would need the computer for at least 10 days but could not guarantee that would finally fix the problem. As I travel extensively to Asia, the last thing I need is yet another RSD overseas. I kindly asked to have a replacement or even upgrade (at my cost) to the MacBook Pro.. was told it was impossible at the Apple Store. Yet during my one hour wait, despite an appointment, they replaced 6 Ipod that had failed... I advised tham that it might be better to cut their loses on my unit and write it off. I even proposed to have them sell me a refurbished pro or anything I could trust. No go, head in the sand attitude, not even a "sorry for your inconvenience" just a "genius" attitude... After a last attempt, I am given a written phone number and told "quietly" to call there to get "REAL" help (?). Got the pleasure to have two different persons to hang up on me! and lost another 30 minutes on the phone for nothing. I own a large corporation and God forbid if I treated my customers anywhere close to what I have gone through with Apple since I bought their Macbook on the first day it was released.
