For those that have sent their MacBooks for Repair (Randon Shutdown)

It seems unfortunantly that many of us are sending are MacBooks in to deal with this random shutdown problem, so I thought it might be usefull if those that have sent their's in could post what parts were replaced and if it was succesfull or not. Thanks

I just took mine to the Genius Bar....guy said the shutdowns were due to a faulty logic board and ordered a replacement for it. I'll let you guys know how it works once they get the part in and it is (hopefully fixed).

I'm far from a technical wiz, but I dont think the high temps are an issue, mine shuts down when it has been sleeping or even turned off...the tempreatures are really low then.

I bought my black MB on June 1st...and the issues started on Sunday. How do I know what week my MB is? If the logic board repair doesn't work, what are the chances of getting a new MB? Is that something even worth trying or do the new ones have the same problem? Should I just switch back to a PC where I at least know my computer will not randomly shut off? I dont want to sound like a jerk, but I bought this thing for law school, and I need a dependable laptop that I know wont randomly turn off and erase all my notes in class. Very upset with Apple right now.

i got my logic board replaced and the shutdowns still came back! how frustrating, no? i thought i could deal with the shutdowns at first because if i held down the power button for 5 seconds, the computer would actually stay on for as long as a few hours. now the misbehaving MB is back at the repair center, hopefully being cured of its ills.

i have a week 22.

Bought my MacBook in L.A. (Farmer's Market Apple Store) but I live in Brazil.
One month and a half passed before the random shutdown problem started, then got unbearable after a few days.
Brought it to an Apple Store in Rio last thursday. On Monday they let me know that the hardware tests detected a bad logic board and mine would be replaced and the MB returned to me within the next week.
I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm not sure how to discover the week my MB was produced...

Ok so i have a week 30 macbook, according the the serial number logic--what does that mean, anyways? I've only had it 2 1/2 weeks, is that just when it was made in the calendar year?? I've also had the "os has unexpectedly quit" message come up--is that the dreaded random shut down?? I've been having other problems with my speakers too--should i send it in?? I'm so scared of losing all my info--how would i back it up?? (i have a 250 gb external hard drive, I just don't know wehre to go on my macbook to do so) Any suggestions welcome--also, how long do i have to purchase the extra warrenty??

I had a Week 27 black MacBook with the random Shutdown problem, which appeared after 3 weeks.
Took it to the London Regent Street Apple Store yesterday and they gave me a new Week 31 one.
I was hoping the problem would not affect Week 31 machines, but I have now read of people with the problem with this build. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but if it happens again, it goes back, this time for a refund.
I suggest that anyone with this problem DEMAND a replacement or refund, and not accept a repair. I think it is outrageous that these machines are not properly tested before they are marketed.

Hey guys,

I am planning on buying a black MB myself, but reading all these threads makes me nervous. I am worried that I would also have to send back and forth my laptop because things go wrong and Apple people don't really know what causes those wrongs.

What would you suggest? I understand that people who experience those problems come and post here. But is this a common thing among those who buy MacBooks? I mean most (or at least a significant number of) people have random shutdowns, overheating and other problems?

Thanks

If anyone goes to an apple store, would you mind asking if they have gotten like a memo or something at all about this. But the thing that I think is the worst part is the extensive marketing done to college students like me, and it seems that a lot of us will be bringing faulty macbooks to school, and what happens when we get to school and they die on us. My school is in the middle of corn... am I gona have to hop on a bus and go to a big city to get this thing fixed, because labtops are priceless in college. Maybe I should have demanded a return...I guess I will just have to hope that by the time mine gets to the facility the apple techs will have found a solution instead of experimenting with the ones that come in. I am glad that this thread is being found usefull though.

Jesus...replaced the battery and that supposedly fixed it. Made them keep the MacBook and send it back for the right thing to get fixed. Called customer relations, nothing they could really do but did get a direct extension so we'll see. 8 friggin days for a battery...thanks Apple, next time I will think about my purchase before making it.

Week 25.

I just called Apple Care and they are familiar with the problem. The tech (Vinny) had me take out both memory modules, and then had me *very firmly* reseat one of them. We then ran the 'Hardware Test' off the install disk. Then he had me firmly reseat the second memory module and run the same test. Neither test returned problems, and he suggested taking it to a Genius if the problem persists, as they have memory that they know is good.

He said that the reseating of the memory has solved this problem for some.

1) 6/18 - bought Mac Book

2) 7/2 - random shutdowns culminating with a gray screen after 2 days (beyond 14 day return policy)

3) 7/5 - went into Apple Store for repair

4) 7/25 - got MacBook back with new logic board

5) 8/13 - random shutdowns started again

6) 8/14 afternoon - guy on Apple Support hotline tells me "man-made things sometimes break" after I said I wanted a new machine. They said I should give them one more shot at fixing it before they considered giving me a new MacBook.

7) 8/14 evening - back to Apple Store for repair. I guess I should have raised more **** with them. Also, the Apple Store tech got stuck on the notion that the random shutdowns were Windows XP related after I told him it crashed in both Tiger and Windows. That wasted about 15 minutes even though he had my previous repair record in front of him.

8) 8/15 - Wondering why I "upgraded" from my aluminum PowerBook.
