For those that have sent their MacBooks for Repair (Randon Shutdown)

It seems unfortunantly that many of us are sending are MacBooks in to deal with this random shutdown problem, so I thought it might be usefull if those that have sent their's in could post what parts were replaced and if it was succesfull or not. Thanks

I sent my White 2.0ghz MacBook out of Friday and received it back today about 20 minutes ago. I have already ran the yes > /dev/null test which would normally cause a shutdown for me and it did not shut down after 5 minutes of that test. So far so good. Here is what they replaced as per my spec sheet:

APP-605-0994 SVC, TOP CASE W APP-630-7253 PCB MLB,
2.0GHZ DC, SMS/ST APP-603-8071 ASSY, HEATSINK,
M42 APP-603-9857 ASSY, BEZEL, M42

Here's the article I mentioned:

I'm not familiar with the reliability of information from this site, so take it as you will. However, if you type in "Macbook shutdown issues" into Google, you can spend hours upon hours looking at individual problems. This may of course be related to the "internet echo effect," but the size of it is uncomfortable, to say the least.

i finally got my mb back yesterday evening. I had to call three times - put a rush on the repair and got it - 3 weeks after sending it in.

As it is, the first repair failed final testing, so they had to start over again.

It is now working - replaced heatsink and logic board and casing (at least the keyboard top for discoloration).

so far it is working great - i'll post if it breaks again.

i received my macbook back today, following are the items that they have replaced:

. 922-7379
. 661-4107

one of them being the top case while the other, the heatsink, don't know which part number belongs to which though.

i was told that the 2 temperature monitoring devices within the heatsink has caused the random shutting down of the system, thus they only changed the heatsink. as for the discoloration, they replaced it with a new top case.

they couldn't find or detect the other problems which i was having:
- vertical lines appearing across the screen
- whinning of the combo drive at the top of its lungs (if it has any)
- led of adaptor not lighting up
- battery logo on menu bar showing a "x" indicating no battery is present

i was told to take a snapshot of those problems which they were unable to detect for future services... so, a note to every fellow owner of apple products, get your camera ready everytime you are using your systems, who knows... it will definitely come in real handy when you need proof for speedy recovery of your systems...

good luck to all

I got my MacBook back on Monday (having dropped the shipping box into the mail on Thursday; after the three+ week turnaround time last time, I'm really happy with the speed of return this time). No shutdowns so far, and it does seem to be cooler. I haven't yet installed the firmware update, though I'll likely do that today.

Parts replaced were: APP-603-8071 ASSY, HEATSINK, M42.

I purchased my macbook (2.0 White) the day it came out, not sure what production week that would be.

I lived with the random shutdowns for awhile (over a month) because I was waiting for Apple to have a better idea on how to fix the random shutdown problem.

I finally brought it in to the Apple Store in Sacramento on 8/18. They sent it off to Memphis (Flextronics) and I got it back yesterday 8/22. It was sent in for a discolored palmrest area (it really wasn't that bad, but since it had to go in anyway) and for "intermittent shutdowns".

They replaced:

App-605-0994 SVC, TOP CASE W APP-603-9857 ASSY, BEZEL, M42 APP-630-7691 PCB, MLB, 2.0GHZ DC, SMS/KONI APP-603-8071 ASSY, HEATSINK, M42.

So far so good. I will update if I encounter any problems.

Black Macbook, Week 19, sent in for repair, NOT FIXED

Replaced:
APP-590-5254 PWR CRD, GND AC ADPTR, NMP, US

Dropped off at the "Genius" bar on 8/5, received it back on 8/23. Opened the box, checked the battery level (full), turned it on, .... and it turned itself off. Tried several more times and eventually it stayed on. But Safari gives me an error message whenever I try to run it, I guess I'll have to re-install.

Taking it back to the apple store this week.

Seriously, thanks for nothing. 😟

Odd. That's the exact same repair I had (whatever it is); mine's been working fine for two weeks. I'm sorry yours didn't work.

Keep us posted as to what happens. (And if you ever find out what those parts are, let me know!)

Considering the problems Apple has with it's logic boards on it's iBooks, Powerbooks and now the Macbook and Macbook Pro, they should give the extended warranty to it's customers with these manufactures defects as a courtsey for their inconvience. I have 2 of these laptops with logic board problems and they keep replacing the faulty logic board with the same faulty logic boards. I don't feel like that's fixing the problem.

Just my opinion.

My week #21 is fixed. Got it back on August 18th and have been using it regularly since. No shutdown and it runs much cooler than before. I'm relieved 🙂

Repair took exactly three weeks and all they did was replace the logic board. I read on a German Mac newssite that the delay was due to a shortage of newly redesigned logic boards. So I really hope the problem is gone for good.

Good luck, mates!

I was asked to keep my week 22 macbook until the replacement logic module comes in next week. I wonder if all these parts come from one source, or your source for Germany is different from my source in North America. You have me wondering if there are 'old' and 'new' stocks of logic modules, and thats why some of us have been having the same problem resurface again. I suppose there is a production date stamped on a module, but i am guessing its not something we would ever see.

Hi, My first Mac, a week #24 black MacBook, I received on July 5th. Random shutdowns started about two weeks ago when I would start it up after I got home from work after being off for about 9 hours. Worked with Apple Support over the phone for a week, performed PMU and PRAM resets, reinstalled OS with no luck. Apple expressed out a shipping box to return my Macbook, I sent my baby out Friday the 18th, Apple received it Monday the 21st, I got it back Tuesday the 22nd. It started right up, I downloaded (with some trepidation) the firmware update 1.4f10, restarted, works great. I shut it down this morning and when I got home from work and started it up (again, with trepidation) it came up with no problems. I really think it's fixed!!!!!! I'm so happy!!!!

Here are the parts they replaced:

APP-590-PWR CRD
GND AC ADPTR
NMP
US APP-603-8071 ASSY
HEATSINK
M42

That's what was listed on my service report. I'm not sure what everything is, all I know is it's working (fingers crossed).

I had noticed that the upper left section on my keyboard was a little warm before, but I was more worried about the random shutdown problem. Now my keyboard is very cool, I'm attributing that to the 1.4f10 update.

I have to say that I'm very pleased with Apple, especially since this is my first Mac and I wasn't sure what I was getting into with everyone else having similar problems. I hope everyone has this success with getting their Macs repaired. Apple impressed me.
