Home Sharing (photos) not working

We listen to iTunes and watch photo slideshows through our Apple TV3 every day. The iTunes on my iMac streams to the Apple TV through Airplay, and I have Home Sharing setup on the iMac so I can view our photos as a slideshow as the music plays.

In the past few weeks, the Photos selection within Computers > *mycomputername* > Photos has not consistently been appearing. A restart of iTunes and the Apple TV usually resolves the issue.

Now (as of yesterday), if I see the Photos shared from the iMac and I select them and choose an album to watch, the Apple TV basically hangs (it progresses VERY slowly to load the preview/slideshow/screensaver screen that normally loads relatively quickly, with a spinning wheel). If I am very patient (not mashing the menu button out of frustration) I can get into a slideshow about once out of every ten tries before the Apple TV gives up and backs out to the main menu screen.

Is anyone else sufferign from this lag/delay? I noticed there was some update that ran a few days ago when I tried to use the Apple TV; is this an iOS issue due to a software/firmware update?

Additional info:

* I tried Home Sharing photos through a laptop instead of the iMac. This exhibited the same issue. Both the laptop and the iMac are running Mavericks.

** I tried streaming a movie through Home Sharing off the iMac and it works almost instantly, without any issues.

*** I just tried loading some much smaller albums (4 photos, 50 photos) and these worked just fine. It looks like the Apple TV is choking on the larger albums (1000+, our main album of 8000+) during the pre-load stage. These exact same albums (not a single photo has been added or deleted in the past few weeks) would previously load within 10 seconds of choosing them on the Apple TV.

**** And now the 8000+ album finally loaded before a return to the main menu screen. I'm pretty baffled as to what is going on with all of this.

I have been using my photos (19000) loaded from iPhoto for years as screensaver and suddenly same problem, wiil not load. Spent hours with Apple support and cannot solve. I was away for the previous week and the latest update seems to have created problem, my opinion. Small sized selection such as events cause no problem and is no solution for me as I random play my music library from smart playlist (0 plays) constantly throughout the day.

Well, it's good to hear I'm not the only one, thanks Guy.

BTW, I did the old "hold down cmd+option while starting iPhoto" trick, and have so far repaired permissions, rebuilt thumbnails, and repaired the database on the iMac. No change. I'll probably try rebuilding the database today after doing a backup.

I managed to get the 8000+ album to load again yesterday, but it took a solid two minutes to do so, and didn't look like it wanted to (a screen with the thumbnail boxes, slideshow and screensaver buttons outlined, but nothing filled in and nothing updating as time passed).

I'll send in an official Apple complaint once I try the database rebuild. Any other opinions on this issue are welcome.

I have started getting same issue too initially on a brand new version 3 device which had bee working fine for a week.

I reported it to Apple support who think it may be a hardware issue and I should get a replacement from the vendor.

However I have a version 2 device in the bedroom which having checked yesterday (18th) also shows exactly the same symptoms.

I am running up to date versions on all OS's and like you, events and smaller albums in iPhoto's work fine. The issue is only when I go to the entire library (about 18000 photos) the screen sits on 'loading' for about a minute and just crashes back to the home screen.

I emphasise the fact that I use this functionality almost daily and it was working fine until last Thu 13 March 2014.

I am Calling Apple TV support again with latest issues today!

Good luck with Apple Support. Iwent through the gamet with a senior advisor and he is stumpted. Maybe someone differant will be able to solve. They want to tell me I have too many photos and that is all wrong. Have had thousands with original Apple TV with an attached hard drive ( I know it isn't the same) plus both version 2 and 3 with no problems. Thisis definately an Apple problem!! I refuse to surrender and am using Airplay for the time being from an iMac but is a real handicap unless I use an iPad for surfing. Please keep posting here for any solution.

OK, I might have a little work-around that might help you for the time being. I went through the same steps as usual, and had the long delay while the photos loaded. Finally, I got kicked back out (in my case, to the screen showing what song was playing on Airplay). At that point I clicked the menu button ONCE very briefly, then waited. And waited. Then the preload screen with all the thumbnails of the photos in the album appeared. And then I waited some more. Finally, the Slideshow and Screensaver buttons at the top of the screen appeared. I was allowed to choose Slideshow, and then start the slideshow without a hitch.

It might have been a fluke, and I hate having to jump through all these hoops, but it might get us through until an update (hopefully) fixes the issue.

Guy: "kicked back to the main menu" in my case is back to an active display of what song is playing over Airplay, NOT the main menu screen showing Movies, Music, etc. The quick Menu click brought me back to the preload screen with all the photo thumbnails.

If I was describing this to a tech, I'd say it looks like the Apple TV software is taking way too long to buffer the photos before allowing them to be played. The software times-out because of the delay, which never used to occur.

Update

Apple support have been working with me today and the problem is still not resolved. Here's what I've been up to...

Apple suggested I carry out the following:

Press Alt when starting iPhoto and create a new library.

Chuck some pix in the new library and share with AppleTV

RESULT: All worked fine and it would coz I only had 25 pix to view!

Delete old Library and go back to original one.

Next

Press Alt+Ctrl when starting iPhoto and start a repair process one at a time in the following order...

Repair Permissions

Repair Thumbnails

Repair Database

This took a couple of hours and I still could not load my entire library.

I then decided to re introduce my pix into Home Sharing 5000 at a time...

5000 took 2 mins to load and worked fine.

10000 took 3 mins to load and worked fine

15000 took 4 mins to load and worked fine

19000 took 2 mins to crash!!!

I realise there is a lot of Pix in my library but I have never experienced theses issues before last week. It is without doubt a reduction in service caused by an Apple update.

Getting back in touch with Apple Support....

OK, I'm in the midst of a call with Apple support (Canada, case ID 590103665). They had me do a restart/cache cleanse by holding down menu+down on the Apple remote for 6 seconds, then letting go. The first time through, the large album successfully loaded, but very slowly (60 seconds vs the expected 5 seconds or so).

I asked the tech to wait while I tried again, and the Apple TV proceeded to hang on the thumbnail loading screen. She then had me run an iOS restore command from the settings menu, and they will be following up with me in the next hour or so. I'll post the results.

Mar 19, 2014 11:49 AM in response to Ken Peck

The restore required a bunch of re-submitting of user names and passwords for iCloud, Home Sharing, Netflix, and so on. I'm not noticing any chnage, other than I can still finesse my way in with that quick Menu button click once the first try at loading the photos has timed out.

The follow-up call was with a different person, who wanted me to start messing with my Network and/or computer settings. I was in the middle of stating that I believed the iOS update was responsible when we were disconnected. I'm not inside of the 1 yr support period, so I suspect they might be cutting thier losses at this point. We'll wait and see if they call back.
