Maya and Mac Pro

Has anyone tried Maya with the mac pro? I have ordered Maya and a Mac Pro. The Personal Learning Edition works fine on my macbook. At least it opens and I can do things. I haven't tried to render yet. Anyone tried the mac pro yet?

That's all great news--even better since I stopped by the Apple store today to check out the Mac Pro firsthand. Even the display Mac Pro with lower specs than I'm requesting shows more promise than the double Xeon PC I've been working on for 2 years going. Nothing's more satisfying to me than "comping" quickie art with HD1080 settings in FCP and Motion in less than a few minutes render. My Turtle renders are gonna scream!

Just need to write out my justification and hope for the best!

I've been running maya 6.5 on a mac pro. Command line rendering and batch rendering don't work with some scenes. Render times on scenes that do render are slower than my G5 2ghz system. I'm thinking about installing a 64bit linux OS. I believe Fedora's latest OS supports the mac pro. Has anyone else tried running linux with a 64bit version of Maya 8.0?

I am running Maya 7 on a 3 gig MacPro...

I would not recommend anyone who uses Maya heavily to
get a MacPro, unless you want to run Windows. In
which case it is mad fast.

Rendering in Maya in OSX is painfully slow on the
MacPro. Lightning fast on the MacPro running XP. I
doubt that a universal version of Maya will be slow
on the Mac.

This is interesting. I'm mostly using LightWave 9 and
beyond. It doesn't have a UB version yet but one is due
out VERY soon I hear.

What's so interesting is that even though LW9 for mac is
not UB and not 64bit I still get the expected performance
increase on the MacPro Hardware running OSX. For example a
12min scene on a WinTel box with a 3GHz HT cpu renders in
3.1min. on the 2.66 MacPro. The render times are comparable
with a fairly regular ratio of ~ 1:4 across the board for
a great many scenes. Occasionally I surprised and find a
4 min. scene on WinTel PC rendering in 10sec. on MacPro 2.66.

What's interesting about that?

- Will LW 9.x UB be even MORE fast?
- How about LW 9.x UB 64? - Or are all UBs 64bit?
- Why is Maya so much slower under Rosetta than LW?
