Phone keeps saying "iPhone could not be activated because the activation server cannot be reached"

That's a solution if the phone is SIM-locked, or displays the message "Please insert a SIM." It is not a solution for "Activation Server cannot be reached."

There are 2 primary causes.

1) You don't have a SIM card in it. A SIM is required to activate it.

Solution: Insert a valid SIM

2) The phone was hacked or jailbroken to unlock it.

Solution: Buy a phone that wasn't hacked or jailbroken.

Same problem with my newly unlocked iPhone4S. Been trying for THREE DAYS and still no success! Tried it using wifi and connecting to iTunes via my Mac with absolutely no success.

The phone was unlocked correctly, by the original phone company and the Apple IMEI database updated accordingly. No jailbreak or unofficial hack.

Apple's response was to tell me to open a diagnostic email from them in the phone. THE PHONE CAN'T BE ACTIVATED TO ENABLE ME TO DOWNLOAD THE EMAIL!!!
