Safari Unusable in IOS 7.1

I have a 128 gb Ipad 4 that was operating just fine on IOS 7.0.

Following the 7.1 update, Safari became unusable. Any keystroke required several seconds to appear. If I typed my words without them appearing, then about 5 to 7 seconds later they would machine-gun across the window.

I did a full restore last night but the behavior of Safari is identical today.

I'm giving up on Safari and using only Chrome, which works instantly and perfectly.

I don't need to hear from those of you who have Safari working fine. I know you're out there and don't care about your flawless 7.1 experience. It only wastes both our time for you to add it to the thread.

I'm not looking for any answers out there either because I don't think they're available until Apple updates the IOS further. I'm just making a record of the problem for Apple and those who have the same problem

Thanks.

Try clearing the browser cache: Settings App > Safari > Clear history and then Clear Cookies and Data.

Possibly followed by a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.

The reset may or may not be necessary, but will not hurt.

For the record:

  • Posting here will do nothing in terms of "making a record of the problem" (what ever you think that would accomplish). You are basically addressing fellow users, which, in turn leads to:
  • You also do not get to determine who does and does post to a thread. Get over it.

What's very interesting, is that if I go into Settings and "Erase all content and Settings", leaving only the generic 7.1 as it would come out of the box, then Safari works just fine.

Something in the content of restoring the backup throws a big wrench into Safari's operation.... An App? Movie?

Etc... Dunno.

I don't have the time to do incremental additions to see what it might be.

FIXED! Too many Safari Bookmarks. IOS 7 Safari is not Happy with that.

First, ---HOW I got there.

I did take the time selectively reducing all purchased apps and rechecking Safari to the point that the IOS was stripped of everything down to the original, loaded IOS 7.1 apps including Safari from the backup which included all bookmarks. Nothing else was on the IPad..... No music, video, mail, podcasts, photos or movies. I still had the problem. If I "Erased all content and Settings, the problem disappeared.

What was the difference... Only the remaining Safari with ---my backed up bookmarks and settings.

So I restored the IPad to it's original state, from four days ago which included all content from the backup. (Over 100 gb of stuff.)

I tried only "Reset All Settings". No change. Therefore it was something in the "Content" as "Erase All Content And Settings" always fixed it. There's only one piece of Content that I had not selectively eliminated before......

BOOKMARKS!

I edited Favorites in Safari, eliminating about half of my 180-200 bookmarks!

VOILA! Safari now works exactly as designed.

Did the same on my IPad 2 as well as my IPad 4. FINALLY! IOS 7.1 produces a stable, fast and responsive Safari on the IPad 4 or IPad 2. It's of course never been an issue on my IPad a Mini with Retina Display as the blazing fast processor doesn't even see the bookmarks as any memory or speedbump whatsoever.

Reduce your bookmarks people! Safari will now work for you in IOS 7.1.
