No Dolby Digital Apple TV 3 firmware 6.1 (6698.99.16)

I found that if you downgrade your ATV back to iOS 5.3.1, that you will need to reenter all of your login credentials for netflix, HBOgo, iTunes, etc.

I also found that downgrading breaks the Internet Radio widget.

IMO downgrading introduces a new set of hassles, so I found it was easier to stay at iOS 6.1 and use Airplay for Netfix to get the full DD 5.1 experience.

Same here... been struggling for days trying to figure out why ATV3 will not accept DD from iTunes Library over optical. All I see is an L and R on my Pioneer VSX-53 front panel and also seeing a new outline that says AUTO Digital. But no LFE, Surr, or the other speakers like it used to show!!! Blu-ray player has no problem with sound over optical and it's automatic, no fiddling with any surround settings at all !

UPDATE: After reading some more about this bug, I realize that I am on ATV3 6.1 and my Mac is 10.6.8 - The 2 are obviously NOT compatible!! I would sure appreciate it if someone could post a safe way to downgrade back to 5.3 so I can get back to happy operation!! Typical APPLE.... ignore half of us and screw the other half!

Except that accessing a movie on ATV from the itunes library via "Computers" doesn't have DD 5.1 either. Which means it's an ATV issue!

Not true for me. I get DD 5.1 when playing a movie this way on my ATV 3. The only time I can't get DD is when using the Netflix App on the ATV.

If that's your opinion then why are you still an Apple customer? And you are absolutely sure Apple did this intentionally and has no plans to fix it? Wow, you must really love being screwed by a company who has no care for you at all.

I received this from Netflix support:

Yeah you know what, it's actually a known issue if you could believe it. All the users of the Apple TV 3rd gen are experiencing the same issue of not being able to pick up that 5.1 sound.

So it's something that our engineers are working on getting back up and running, they and Apple are working to figure out why it's been malfunctioning.

So I would ask that you watch in regular stereo audio and before you know it, the 5.1 surround will be back and useable for you 🙂

OK, well that's interesting. Are you using Optical Input to your AVR? I am using HDMI and Optical to AVR and have my AVR set to use the Optical Input so I can get surround. Not working, just getting L and R. I have an appt. with Apple Store today at noon. Bringing my ATV3 and DEMANDING they restore 5.3 before I leave!!! I am beyond annoyed with this as you can probably tell.

One ATV3 on an older Sony receiver using optical, One ATV3 on a newer Yamaha receiver using optical, and one ATV3 on a newer Yamaha receiver using HDMI. If I go to "Computers" on my ATV3s, I can stream movies and TV shows and my receivers indicate DD 5.1. I get DD 5.1 from all other apps I use that offer DD 5.1 streams EXCEPT Netflix.

Good luck "demanding" that Apple downgrade your firmware to a previous version. I'll be really surprised if this is successful. Also, unless something has changed on Apple's side in the last few weeks, it is not possible to downgrade the latest ATV (3,1) as previous firmware versions are no longer signed by Apple.

This is so typical of Apple. Maybe time to "JB" the ATV3

Could there be some other reason my Pioneer vsx-53 is not accepting the Optical Input from ATV3? Using HDMI instead?

Nothing has changed except 6.1 update.

It isn't JB-able.
