Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Step 1

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Step 2

In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report — they're very long and not helpful.

I take it that the version of SilverLightPlugin that works for Firefox does not work for Safari (if they share it)

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Linc,

This is interesting, several months ago I could not get streaming to work on Xfinity using Firefox although the error message was different. After literally months with Comcast technical support (to no avail) by shear luck I mentioned the problem to a Verizon tech who told me to create a "non-administrator" account which I did and by logging on in that the problem was solved. At some point, I discovered that I no longer needed to use the "guest" account I had created. I figured that someone had fixed the problem with Firefox.

With that long preamble, the streaming works with no problem when I am signed in on a guest account that I created (not the auto-created guest account). This account that I created is also a standard (not an administrator account).

I await your next message.

Back up all data.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Silverlight

Right-click or control-click the line and select

Services Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Trash. Relaunch the application and test.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Linc,

Your first instruction to back up all data, begs a question. Do you mean back up my entire computer? I know there is always a chance that a backup will be needed when messing with programming, but if the chance is anything but very remote, I will opt to live with my problem which is easy to work around. I have 175 GB backup and it takes a while to backup and also to restore and, at the moment, I am under a deadline and need the computer.

If the chance of needing the backup is remote (if I follow your instructions to the letter) than I would give this a shot.

You use the term "contextual menu" there seems to be an asterisk following. I am not sure what a contextural menu i. Will it be obvious? You then say there will be an item selected. Is that item the application that may be running or are those two different things? Then you say relaunch the application--is Safari or some other application?

On the alteranate method using the clipboard and Go menu, when I Go to Folder, a box is going to appear. Again, will this be obvious?
