Safari "plugin failure" message

How do I address a "plugin failure" in Safari?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9), 2.4GHz Intel Core 17, 4GB DDR3

The folder/application that showed up was Silverlight (not a big surprise there). Into the trash and the problem is gone. Was that the new Silverlight that I added that caused the problem, or an old version that should have been disposed of when the new one was installed? I should have checked it out, but wasn't sure it would be a good idea to deviate from your instructions.
