trouble installing 1TB HD in late 2011 MBP 17"

I have just got my hands on the last 2011 model MBP17", but it was fitted with a 500GB solid state drive, which is not really big enough

I have tried to replace it with a 1TB 5400rpm drive from mid 2009 MBP 17", but it doesn't recognise it

Will the later one only take more modern types of drive?....or what?

(the 500GB went into the 2009 MBP with no trouble or data loss)

You can re-download the Mac OS X software that "shipped in the box" with a particular Mac -- for that specific Mac -- until that version is no longer supported (appears to be forever).

You can download a version you bought (or effectively bought) with a particular Apple-ID as many times as you like. Each copy is tagged with your Apple-ID, and you will usually have to re-enter the Apple-ID and password to re-download.

There is no stinky "you can download twice and then you're screwed". That is the way Microsoft does it, not Apple.

I am just reporting what actually happened. It is only through these discussions that I even have a URL for downloading ML; that is the URL US version, and then manually changing the US to UK; no trace of it on the UK shop. Then have to wait upto 3 business days to get a slot and takes hours to download

Also Apple UK support may not be what you have in US. Here you can waste a lot of time on the phone only to be told to take the machine to your local dealer. That used to be fine when they were a friendly local firm and you sat next to the guy doing whatever with modest or no charge - less clever after n takeovers and they charge £80 ($120?) just for booking it in and holding it for several days for just a report, much less any action.

Again, just immense gratitude to you guys for keeping the show on the road

"I was told that Lion (the original OSX) could only be used on the 2011 MBP"

I hope no longer true, or I really will be upset if that was the reason it refused my 'purchase' download. I can't see that it can be as it is running ML perfectly well off my external drive.

You do this through Recovery_HD. The original "shipped in the box" software (possibly updated to the latest subversion available) will be sent in response to a request to re-download the software using Recovery_HD.

There should be an extra Recovery_HD on any Time Machine backups after 10.4.

If you do not have a Recovery_HD, you may need to use the one on the old drive, use it to re-download, then interrupt the Install and copy the Installer to the new drive, or make a USB or a Dual-Layer DVD of the Installer.

You can make a copy of the existing Recovery_HD onto a 1GB or larger thumb drive using Recovery Disk Assistant:

This is a screenshot of my "Purchases" tab after I log in to the App store. Since I bought 10.7 Lion, and 10.8 Mountain Lion, these are available for me to re-download at the click of a button.

Mavericks is showing differently because I downloaded it and made a Dual-Layer DVD, then Installed from the DVD. Since the "Install OS X Mavericks .app" is still sitting in my Applications folder, complete and ready to Install, the button changes to "Downloaded" and is not active for the System I am currently using to access the store.

I think the problem is identified by a new message I got today under the 'purchase' tab with a cross next to ML and message that it is not available from the UK shop. I am getting it under a 'redeem' protocol referring to a 'volume license'....I imagine a way AppleStore UK get stuff from US

I did that with 10.8 Mountain Lion. After redeeming the "coupon"/ bulk purchase/whatever they want to call it, it showed as a regular purchase on my Purchases page ever after.

Others were able to purchase it directly in the past, and I think you should be able to re-download it after you have "redeemed the coupon" with that torturous procedure they sent you with it.
