iPhone 5 screen popped out - can't push back in

I noticed my iPhone 5 screen popped out in the bottom left corner a few weeks ago (it has never been dropped, not sure how this happened).

It's still functional, so I didn't do anything at that time. Now, the screen is slowly popping out a little more, where it is starting to affect my round home button, making it a little loose.

I can push the screen back down, but it just pops back up, and doesn't want to stay down.

I will have access to a 5-Point Pentalobe screwdriver next week, so I could try to remove the bottom screws to see if it will pop back in easier after I do that, but was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions.

My phone is no longer under warranty, so I can't swap it at the Apple Store without costing $$$.

I am attaching a few photos of the iphone to this thread.

Could this be due to a swollen battery? Has anyone else had this happen?

Thanks

Hi Ina, I am in Jakarta and I have the same problem, my screen has pooped out and I have brought it to the Apple store Ibox.

Same answer like you i got, out of warranty and they will replace the battery for 1,5 mio..... crazy. I have checked my serial number in the replacement program but my serial number is not there. Or maybe because it is Indonesia????

Anyway I am checking now to get some tools and battery from Germany. I think it will cost about 650.000 and I will try to change the battery myself......

If you have any better luck than me please tell me.

My phone is 2.5 years old. I just noticed my phone screen was popped up on the left side on Friday. It lives in it's case, and I don't remember dropping it. I took it to the Genius bar on Saturday - the iPhone 5 has a problem with a "swollen battery". The store replaced my phone for free. It took a little while to get it started back up from the backup on the computer, but now it works fine.

I took the phone there a month ago and told them that the battery was not working correctly. They diagnosed it and said that it was fine. If they had to replace the battery it would have cost me $79, but instead, since the battery damaged the phone it was replaced.

Thanks folks!! I was planning to go to a local shop to get it fixed before I saw your post.

I had the same issue with my iphone 5, I visited Phoenix and Grand Canyon last week and stayed out for a while in 110+ degree temp and suddenly my screen popped out on left side and would not go back in.

I took genius bar appointment (Houston area - Highlands Apple store) and went there today. Initially the guy who was helping me said we need to get front assembly replaced and it would cost me around $125+. I mentioned about your post and said It has to do with battery because I have checked on apple support community and lot of people faced this problem. He said let me get battery checked and took it inside. After few minutes, he appeared and said that the battery is swollen and they will replace the phone with a new phone.

So final result - They replaced my 2 and half year old phone which was in really bad shape with damages all around (obviously no warranty) with a new iphone 5.

Always a fan of Apple!! Awesome service!!

Hope it helps other folks like me!!

My screen starting popping up after a trip to Florida. I reviewed this blog and went to an Iphone repair store, and they said it is either the battery ballooned or screen needs to be popped back in. Note: My battery also seemed to not hold as well.

I decided to set up a meeting with Apple and the Apple Associate told me, we can take your phone and replace your screen. I then proceeded to probe and ask if it could be the battery. He was fairly new to Apple, so he asked a manager and the manager said she can completely replace the phone ,no questions asked because it is most likely the battery and that is Apple's problem.

It was a quick, easy process and this blog was VERY informative.

Note: Make sure your phone is fully backed up prior to going to apple.

I had a similar experience as the above.

Top of the screen was popping out.

Set up an appointment with the Genius Bar (in the Netherlands).

Initially, (after the genius went to the back) I was told that it wasn't the battery(it was fine) and they didn't know what caused it but I could pay ~100 to have the screen replaced.

Not having any other option I said OK.

After an hour and a half, I came back and a different person came out to say the repair person in the back had replaced the screen.

Additionally, the repair person had found the battery was swelling and so also replaced the battery.

They would not charge me for the battery replacement but they would still charge me for the screen replacement.

I explained that the screen replacement was only because it was popping out (not because it was damaged) and explained that swelling of the battery was forcing the screen to pop out. (The person was just bringing me out the phone and seemed a bit confused and re-read the work order.) She then went and talked to her manager and came back to say that because of the swelling both would be replaced for free.

My take away here is that when the Genius goes back to get an initial review, it's pretty superficial. In retrospect, I don't think they examined the battery at all.

If I hadn't been willing to pay for the screen replacement, they wouldn't have actually looked at the battery and seen the swelling.

Also, the person you are talking to isn't the person doing the repair and it's good to review/re-explain.

(Hope this helps someone as this thread was really helpful to me.)

(As noted above, make sure you back up your phone before going in)

Hi guys,

I bought my iphone 5 in India 2 years back, and now I am currently residing in Australia.

The same thing happened to me, and I am glad I can get it fixed without spending money.

Does anyone know if I will be needing a proof of purchase of the iPhone 5, because I don't have any. I lost it in the commotion of moving to a new country. Can someone PLEASE help me out??

URGENT!!!

Take it in to an Apple store and ask. You won’t need proof of purchase anyway because the warranty has ran out.

They may take a look at it and try to get it sorted but very doubtful they will replace it or spend more than a few minutes trying to get it back together, may not since you iPhone is from India.

People will now post that the iPhone warranty is not international (it is) but it may not be honored in the country other than where it was purchased.

The screen popping out for no reason at all in most cases is due to an expanding battery. This may be covered under Apple's extended battery warranty program (assuming that is indeed what is causing it... 90% of the time that is it). Can't hurt to ask.

If Apple won't touch it due to it being from India (although they should, shouldn't they?), then you have other options to repair through an independent repairer.

I am also facing the same issue. Went to the Apple care, the attendant has submitted my phone and told me to expect a reply in 3-4 days. Firstly, she told me that my phone is out of warrantee. But, when i told her about the apple's manufacturing defect then only she took it for observation. please let me know if any one has the same experience and whats the result. I am in India.i am pretty much concerned about the cost of replacement. I checked I am eligible for the start stop botton replacement but not for battery…

Quoted from the warranty:

IMPORTANT RESTRICTION FOR iPHONE, iPAD AND APPLE TV SERVICE.

Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device.
