How to lock screen horizontally or vertically on an ipad

How do I lock screen position horizontally or vertically on my iPad now that I have loaded the new operating system

iPad 2, iOS 7.1

Then you have set the side button to control rotation lock. You can lock the rotation by moving that button to the down position.

If you prefer to use the side button for mute, then go into Settings > General > Use Side Switch to ..

When the side switch is set to control mute, then the lock rotation icon will appear in the control centre ("short little area in grey") in the place that the mute appears now.

When I swipe up from the bottom, I only have a short little area in grey and it only has volume control, airplane Bluetooth, wireless signal, moon, and mute. To the right there is a clock and a pic of a camera. Below these symbols is a brightness setting and on the left side of this row is play, fast forward, and rewind button
