what you mean by "there is no backup software for windows". Do you mean I can't access it's ability to back up files? That I have to get another external hard drive for this function?
When I bought it years ago the salesman told me it would operate on both Mac and Windows platform. Originally wantted a modem/router than would handle multiple PCs, some without internal modem.
Sorry, that is purely old age.. I read what isn't there. I dream that I have typed logical meaningful comments and not strange vague waffle.
Apple (the Noun that was needed as subject to the sentence).. have no windows backup software. So even if you download the airport utility there is no Time Machine for windows.
And there is another problem.. if your Windows version is home.. the built in backup cannot use network drives.. so you cannot use it for a Time Capsule. There are of course a zillion backup software apps available for windows which will work with network drives.. but MS limited that ability to Pro and Ultimate editions for reasons that are pure marketing. As if home users never have a network backup.
What the saleman told you was true.. from a certain point of view.. (my Star Wars lines start to filter through).
Salesmen are always good at telling the truth from a certain point of view.. Obi Wan would be proud of them ie lies, really bad lies (d-mn is verboten here) and statistics, are always true if you have a sufficiently warped point of view. It is hard to get outright lies to stick.. unless you tell so many you no longer know the difference.
Do you know it is much easier and cheaper and faster and better.. to buy a USB drive.. USB3 if you have a later computer and use that. Plug that into your windows computer, natively format it NTFS and use whatever backup software you like. sell the TCgen1 on ebay.. it will almost pay for it. The $500 you spent purchasing something you never used is a lesson.. i would direct back to the salesmen who convinced you to purchase something you didn't know how to use or needed to use. Learn to resist.
The Gen1 Time Capsule, has a bad bug where it is likely to die on you suddenly in 18months time from overheating.
See my repair site for what and why this happens.
