Comcast email setup on Macbook with Mavericks question

I have searched here, MacRumors, and Comcast, but haven't found an answer to my specific question. I am switching from Verizon to Comcast for my ISP. Trying to configure Comcast in Mac Mail on a late 2013 Macbook using OS 10.9.2.. I have followed the settings suggested by Comcast and posters on here, but still cannot send or receive mail. Is this the culprit? And, if so, how do I change it. When I edit settings it looks good but closes to the Offline setting. Thanks.

Don't add the account using the Mail App. Use System Preferences, Internet Accounts, "Add Other Account," and just follow the instructions.

Note: Be sure to delete your prior accounts and SMTP setups, that you made within the Mail application, beforehand.

Additonal note: Because Windows 8 lacks support for POP mail, Comcast has a beta program setup for IMAP. It will work with Mail too, but you have to register with Comcast before attempting to set it up. https://xcsignup.comcast.net/onboardingapps/imap This setup would probably have to be done within the Maill App.

Go to the Edit SMTP settings.

Select Comcast.

Under the Advanced tab, make sure your password was saved.

Mail doesn't always save this password entry.

This corresponds to these steps:

12.Click the Advanced tab.
13.Use custom port (set to 587) should be chosen.
14Make sure Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) has a checkmark.
15.Make sure Authentication is Password and that User Name and Password are filled in.
16.Click OK.
17.Click the Red Button in the upper left and choose to save changes.

After deleting my Comcast account and re-doing it 4 times, I started receiving email on the Comcast tab in my Apple Mail. Tested it by sending messages (with attachments) to it from my Verizon account and my Gmail account and it now works. Asked a couple of friends to test it and their messages came through ok. Used the port (in) setting of 995 and the port (out) setting of 597 each time. Don't know why it finally worked, but at least it did. Thanks for your replies.
