Problems installing Leopard on a Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5...help!
Hello everyone, if possible I would like some advice from someone who has experience with Leopard installation problems on a PowerPC G5.
Background to my problem:
I recently got a Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5, but it came with my old hard drive inserted, which was in my old 1.6 GHz G5. This hard drive already had Leopard installed previously, which I had been using in my old 1.6 GHz G5. To cut a long story, one day Leopard would not start up (on the 2.3GHz). I tried reinstalling it from the installation disk, archive and install, clean install, but none of them worked! The installation disk works, in that you can start up from it, and use things like Disk Utility etc, but just before actual installation of Leopard, it does this disk verification thing, and it fails that (saying something about 'there is nothing to install onto'). I have also been getting really odd noises from the optical drive, as if there is something wrong with the disk! Some of the sounds were quite loud, and repeating. I tried skipping the disk verification and going straight onto installation, more strange noises from the optical drive, and the installation not progressing beyond a very small way, then a message saying it can't install and to restart. Also, it says something about 'base', sorry should have noted it down. Anyway, I panicked, and tried installing Tiger again, which worked fine! So, my optical drive is fine. I then tried reinstalling Leopard from Tiger, and had more problems, so currently just have Tiger.
I have some questions please:
1) I tried installing Leopard over basic Tiger 10.4, which failed. I have now updated Tiger to 10.4.11, with all software updates. Does Leopard need the updated Tiger firstly, to be able to be installed successfully?
2) Is there a way I can check if my Leopard disk is actually broken, without having to go through another potentially damaging installation attempt, which has previously left me having to install Tiger all over again? The disc worked fine when I upgraded Tiger to Leopard on my old 1.6 GHz G5, why would it have problems all of a sudden on a Dual 2.3 GHz?
I am just trying to research this a bit, before I attempt another installation. I had a whole day of installation heart attacks the other week, it really got me down.
Thank you for reading,🙂
