Having trouble importing pictures into iPhoto

All of a sudden, I can't import photos into iPhoto. I did what has always worked before -- copied the photos from my camera to a folder on my desktop, and used the Import to Library command. iPhoto said "Preparing to import" and then crashed. If I dragged the photos to the iPhoto window, same result. If I tried a single photo, same result. The photos are jpegs, about 6 megabytes each, and open fine in Preview.

I have done this with this particular camera many times, and it's always worked.

iPad mini Wi-Fi, Mac OS X (10.6.8), iPhoto 9.2.3

I passed this issue along to Macintouch. Someone there suggested booting the Mac up in Safe mode. That worked. I subsequently found and removed a startup item (from Verizon), and after that, iPhoto imports everything as expected.

Wow! Glad to hear you got this figured out! I would never have throught to look at the Startup Items. What software from Verizon was it?

It was something I got when trying to change my Verizon e-mail settings. I don't remember its name, but it bothered me with a message whenever I booted up.
