Unable to set up Messages in Mavericks (10.9.2)

I started up Messages and I wanted to set it up to start using it, but "Preferences..." and "Add Account..." is grayed out in the Messages menu (see image below).

How do I get Messages set up?

I'm a complete novice to the app and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Same problem here. All the menu items are grayed out. I use regularly iMessage and it worked great on the iPhone and Mac, but since one of the 10.9.X upgrades something went wrong. First it didn't pop up on Mac, when someone sent me a iMessage etc. I tried to reinstall it. I tried restarts, cleaning some stuff from Library back and forth, but still same result. Today I tried to add a messages account using "Internet Accounts" in System preferences, but for some reason I can do it with Yahoo! account, which is completely nonsense.

Cmon Apple! Do something! Its annoying. Where is your device compatibility? 😟

Hi,

Check and install if required AppleGoth.ttf

This font has been found to be missing in Hard Drive/Library/Fonts and is needed during the "registration" process of the iMessages account (which it goes through each time the app is relaunched).

iMessages accounts (Adding the Apple ID you want to use) can only be done in the Messages app.

They are not added in Internet Accounts. Nor are they part of iCloud (it does seem that Mavericks/Messages 8 want the ID to be linked to iCloud)

Messages will use AIM, Jabber as well as Yahoo and Bonjour and iMessages.

AIM and Jabber can be added in Internet Accounts.

Apple IDs issued by Apple (@mac.com, @me.com and @icloud.com) can be used for AIM valid Screen Names as well as the iMessages Apple ID.

Jabber includes Google and Facebook.

There are now limits on using Older @me.com and @mac.com names on older versions of iChat

OS X: Using me.com or mac.com IDs with AIM in iChat requires OS X v10.7.2 or later

Hi,

That certainly is magic !!!

I seem to have made a typo, as it SHOULD be AppleGothic.ttf, but in creating the duplicate you seemed have "fixed" the AppleGothic font you did have.

I apologise for the typo.

I would guess you happened to rename the Original Font the the shorter name and the Duplication Process "fixed" the issue with the Font.

Hi Ralph,

This is crazy. I was having the same problem and had seen a different post of yours that suggested checking on AppleGothic.ttf. I looked and it was already in place, so I didn't pursue that line. Nor would the others in this thread, I suspect, had you not made that typo! Sure enough, I duplicated the font to a different name and Messages worked. I then trashed the original AppleGothic.ttf and renamed the duplicate to AppleGothic.ttf and all is well. It seems likely that simply making a new duplicate and trashing the original in one move could have done it, but that's for someone else to try.

At any rate, thanks for the advice, and especially for making the typo (no apology necessary there),

John
