Gapless Playback on iPod Classic 80GB

Hello:

I have done some searching on the web and can't seem to find the right answer. I have an iPod Classic 80GB. Many of my albums have gapless playback. I use Audiograbber with Lame to convert my CDs to mp3s, and it works most of the time just fine.

In fact, the gapless part works fine all the time, but there are instances when I hear a very small "click" as the songs are transitioning from one to another, which irritates me. Interestingly, if I hook up my iPod to my computer and play my songs from my iPod through iTunes (not from my computer library), the click is not present and it all works great. But when I disconnect my iPod and play my songs while commuting, that's when I encounter these "clicks". It's almost like iTunes knows what to do with it and it eliminates the click, but my iPod on its own does not.

According to iTunes, my iPod software is up to date. I have also tried specifically selecting the album and making it a "gapless" album, and this does not work either.

Any assistance will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Where and how did you do that? I thought that the Gapless setting had been removed from iTunes - I certainly can't find it. I think (but I'm not certain) that iTunes simply manages gapless all the time.

Perhaps this would work properly if you used iTunes to import the CD, is there any reason why you are not doing so? (You can choose to import as MP3 if you wish.) Especially as you yourself say...

I am still using iTunes 10, and if I select an album, right click, and go into Get Info and Options, I will get this option. But you are right, iTunes does manage gapless on its own. Regardless, I could be wrong, but this definitely does not seem to be an iTunes issue, since iTunes has no trouble with it - it's just my iPod.

I use Audiograbber and not iTunes to rip my files because Audiograbber gives me several options. I can, in one try, get both a losless version (WAV) and a compressed version of an album. And I like to have both for certain albums. Also, this may sound strange, but my ears like Audiograbber / LAME files better. Whether it is because I am used to them or because they are truly better I don't know, but it is what it is.

All I am saying is that - if I play these files from the very same iPod using iTunes, there is no problem, but if I play them without it hooked up to iTunes, there is a problem. It shouldn't be that way because in theory, iTunes and iPods are part of the same family. And you may be correct, if I simply use something else such as iTunes to rip this cd, it might all work out for me, which is what I will try tonight (but I wanted to see if someone else had suggestions prior to me trying).

Thanks for your input.

Just wanted to close the loop on this. Yes, ripping my files using iTunes did the trick, eliminating the "gapless clicks" on my iPod when it is not connected through iTunes. I am not happy with this type of a solution, but it is what it is. Some of the issues I am having are from Bandcamp mp3s purchased directly from the artist that I obtain in addition to FLAC files. So basically, I have to convert FLAC to Wave and then rip my CD created with aforementioned Wave files using iTunes to avoid the issue, which is a pain.

This is still not an ideal solution, because, as I said, the mp3s purchased from sources other than iTunes may still have the same issue. What is your solution for those who want to suppor the artists directly? I tried to ask my question in a very curteous way and explained why I do what I do, and you obviously came with your fighting gloves on for whatever reason. I never could understand why people can be insulting towards others whom they do not know on the internet, especially since I obviously did not try to offend anyone. People on the internet aren't just some fictitous characters - they can be teachers, nurses, etc. Well, all I can say to that is - good luck and I hope that others find your contributions helpful. Cheers!
