Skype video quality is poor. Is there a better way to videoconference?

I don't know a lot about VOIP. My recent VOIP experiences with Skype have been bad. Very low frame rate, often stopping altogether, some random disconnects. Audio is okay most of the time, but audio also gets interrupted at times. It seems like there is a bandwidth bottleneck somewhere, presumably on Skype's servers. I think my DSL -- and the DSL on the other end -- is more than fast enough to support better voice and picture quality.
